There are dozens of retailers that have simply ordered a shipping container of 100 China-made bikes and then have installed a hub-motor, you can even order bikes with the front/rear hubmotor already installed.

The invention of the BBS01/BBS02 by Bafang has opened up a whole new world for retailers who are selling bicycles with this mid drive family already installed:

This doesn't surprise me at all. Most of my client builds are with the BBS. It works so well and takes such little time effort to do a quality install. I think we will see some frames custom built for the drive in the near future that allow the motor section to sit vertically to produce a real OEM feel to the bike.

Just like this one http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=60418

Custom frame to allow vertical mount with a fat down tube to allow for internal/integrated battery would be just about perfect for this drive.

Now if Bafang would release the cable extensions available in Germany to the rest of the market, and some connectors to customise and keep the OEM setup, I'd be happier with my two.

Thanks for the lead to the users. Good news for the rest of us who have made the leap. More sales, more support!

Hehe!, That's my next frame on the weld lines...I'll keep you updated if It's of interest.

About OEM BBS, there is the Diavelo. Pics from last eurobike report thread:

What I would like to see is a step through frame that can still hold the battery on the downtube, has tabs to mount hydraulic brakes, has strong horizontal drop outs so an IGH can be mounted without a tensioner for a chain or gates belt drive. It would need to come in a large size and accommodate the BBS-02. Ability to run wires and cables through the frame would be nice as well. I'm heavy and old and this would help me immensely.

We're a fraction of the market. Even though I'm no longer obese, step through frames are all sized for women. And shorter women at that. I find a crank forward frame solves the mounting problem. The rest of the features in a pedal forward frame would excite me.

While the bike is a meh, but only because I only ride a crank forward frame, the battery is extremely curious to me. Especially the line about not being soldered cells.

To this n00b that is one interesting battery design! I want a 36V!!!! Could this be a future battery design we'll see mainstreamed?

I can't wait for a tear down!

"A unique feature of our battery is that the cells are not welded, but held in place with pressure between copper contacts.

"Our standard battery packs have 39 cells arranged in a tight grid and separated with fire resistant barriers. This yields 404 watt-hours of energy."

"..our Mini 48V Battery will give you about 31 miles (50 kilometers) of real world range.."

See link for battery testing.

Curious to see how the batteries do

Volton joins the Bafang mid drive family as an option, only the 36V 350W 20-MPH version so they can use the existing downtube battery, but its a start at $2200

I'm in $1700 with a new bike and kit w battery. So given the nice battery in frame...IMO not bad. Didn't notice which BBS0x it is. If it's a 750 w add $200 to my cost...

The guy needs to have his arm removed and get up to speed on programming options. WTF?

Thanks for the post Spinning - you're 100% correct, adding a motor is within the capability of almost any bike owner - however as you stated, its just a matter of time before the retail giants get in on the band wagon and offer electric bikes as they do now such as the ones in Wal-mart. Just a matter of time before all the mom & pop stores like Luna and Lectric are eaten up by the China Marts.

The same thing happened to RC helicopters - hell you can buy a drone right in best Buy now - no one seen them coming!

Here's a bike available right now Cabela's

Nice, I wonder if you could get more pics of the frame, bare naked and all the parts. It seems like a clever take on the frame design, but how much (if any) expensive will the extended CNC work for the frame add to the total cost? I could see CNC a frame for one-offs but I fear the cnc work will be more expensive then welding.

I haven't been keeping up with this thread, but it's only because so many retailers are beginning to use existing bicycles and adding a BBSxx drive to it. Luna asked to be posted, so it is only fair to post Lectric too.

Lectric Cycles of Las Vegas is retailing the Giant Stance 2 bicycle with a BBS02

Wow, the more I see BBSXX bikes being offered, the more I want to try one!

Hopefully I can find a local Portland Ebike company that will have something I can test ride.

I was very surprised how quiet they can be (at least at low speeds) I got to try out Rassy's 500w on his Tadpole trike for a bit when he visited, and I will most likely be building one up on a beach cruiser frame here in the near future for work!

After I get my Vision R-40 back up to running again with it's Hub as Mid-Drive, I will have to put a BBS02 on my 700c Hybrid.

Great topic, there are quite a few actually and some really great designs too. The Mekkanobike looks amazing by the way one of the best designs I've seen.

Dillinger has two models with Mid Drives BBSxx
http://dillengerelectricbikes.com/electric-bikes/performance.html

This SUV thing actually uses a BBSxx in one of the configurations.

They seem to like the BBSxx mid drives too

I am sure there are more...

The "Super 73" looks like those "mini-bikes" a lot of guys rode as kids in the 1960's, which usually came with a lawnmower engine. The tires are 20-inch X 4.25 fatties.

I'm a backer of the Super 73 from Lithium Cycles. Hopefully in less than two months I'll be able to give everyone a review.
