This may be the patent: http://v3.espacenet.com/publicationDetails/biblio?DB=EPODOC&adjacent=true&locale=en_EP&FT=D&date=20100304&CC=US&NR=2010051373A1&KC=A1

Good spotting Miles!

[0096] By means of the clutch 8, pedal driving transmission device 4 can be driven by the motor driving transmission device 2 so that the feet of the rehabilitating patient are passively forced to follow the rotation of the pedal crank 42 to perform pedal exercise during "rehabilitating mode". Thus, both effects in physical exercise for rehabilitation and enjoyment of beautiful scenery can be achieved concurrently.

Don't much like the look of all those internal springs and pawls...

There's a Chinese company, Suzhou Bofelli, that do a very similar looking motor. I tried 1 recently and it worked quite well and had a freewheel on the crank along with a throttle. Aimed at the European market so only low powered and also requires a custom frame.

How quiet was it, cell_man?

If it's a direct drive motor at circa 70rpm, it will be no surprise that it's low powered  The patent above does include a version with a planetary gear stage, though.

It was pretty quiet from what I remembered but I only had a quick spin, inside and at low speed. It felt reasonably strong for a 250W setup but nothing special, but it's not going to at that power. There were a few companies using the motor on their ebikes, all aimed at the European Pedelec market. Bofelli didn't actually have a stand at the show AFAIK.
