Ok, not really sure exactly where to put this, so I'm putting it in here. I'm looking to turn a gas chipper shredder to an electric. I was thinking of using one of my extra DC motors. But then I had a thought that they have some that run off 120, so I was wondering if I could use a 5 hp AC motor. Basically I wouldn't need throttle modulation, so wondering if I could just run it with an on/off switch. I think this might have high arching possibilities, but they have that on the 120v versions.

Looking for some ideas.

5hp would chip 2x2

Depends how big your switch is. At 120v your near 40 amps. A contactor would be more suitable.

5 hp is the standard gas size for home use, so I was going with that.

This is the biggest electric chipper I could find for sale. It is 1.5hp, but they claim it can do the same sized limbs as the 4 hp gas model.

They also went with a AC 120v.

Actually, that looks a lot like the motor on my old air compressor that has a blown metal air line that I stopped using. I have an old 5hp gas chipper that doesn't work, picked it up for free. I think I might try to merge the two of those together.

I have a 2.4kW (3.2 hp) electric shredder . (240 v, 10A)... No way will it chip more than a 3/4" stick, even with new cutters.
My buddys 5 hp ICE shredder will handle double that size easily.
