Kepler Friction drive comes of age.

I thought I would post an update on my latest friction drive design. Although the previous design made from 304 stainless has been very successful, there were elements to the design that I wanted to improve on. Firstly, I wanted to see if I could come up with a 3D printed design that would be...

Full suspension mountain bike Friction Drive

A quick update on the Stumpjumper conversion. Firstly a couple of upgrades to the bike. New rear shock. Fox DPX2 replacing the stock unit. Also replaced the stock Sram NX derailleur with the new ASX12 speed electronic derailleur. j0FVsFWmcZA Such a nice shifter with the added bonus of...

My RC Mid Drive with Single Stage Reduction

Don't knock it before you try it. Light weight low power eMTB's are the future. Not the perfect solution but its all about compromises that you can live with. :)

Wayne’s Dengfu Carbon Fibre FS 27.5” with Bafang M600 (throttle also)

Hi Wayne. I have been playing around with Vesc's for so long, I forget there is a learning curve with how to set them up. Vesc's are designed as a skateboard controller and as such the throttle input is typically done using a receiver coupled to a wireless handheld throttle. The input is a...

Wayne’s Dengfu Carbon Fibre FS 27.5” with Bafang M600 (throttle also)

I buy from Flipsky. Very good service and quality Vesc builds. I use the the mini all the time for my friction drive builds. https://flipsky.net/collections/electronic-products/products/mini-fsesc4-20-50a-base-on-vesc-widely-used-in-eskateboard-escooter-ebike Also highly recommend you get...

Wayne’s Dengfu Carbon Fibre FS 27.5” with Bafang M600 (throttle also)

I think if I had a controller failure and there was no option for a new controller, I would just install a Vesc controller. Would need to run it sensorless but the Vesc works quite well sensorless. Also would need to make it throttle only. The Vesc would even fit in the motor cavity. Another...

Wayne’s Dengfu Carbon Fibre FS 27.5” with Bafang M600 (throttle also)

Interesting, I will keep an eye on that. Today I was in assist mode 1 and had been for the last 10km. I hadn't made made any changes and then the assist just suddenly stopped. to be honest, getting the bike home under pedal power wasn't a big deal (even got a Strava cup on the way home lol)...

Wayne’s Dengfu Carbon Fibre FS 27.5” with Bafang M600 (throttle also)

You Jinxed me Wayne. I got an error 30 halfway through my ride today. I need an Allen key to get to my battery to cycle power but had forgotten my tools so it was a hard pedal back to the carpark. Hopefully an isolated incident but will make sure I have my tools with me next ride.

Full suspension mountain bike Friction Drive

Looks a little tight in there but it has been a well proven mounting position. Check this out. https://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=22187 Friction drives using RC Outrunners have been around for a long time. What made them cooler was the Vesc and FOC mode which shut them...

Full suspension mountain bike Friction Drive

A 6384 motor is quite wide and may not fit between your cranks. I normally use 6354 motors but I know a 6364 will fit Ok also. The Vesc Mini are great. That's all I use these days.

Full suspension mountain bike Friction Drive

The motor is attached to swingarm as it needs to move with the suspension. Yes 4 cable ties are used to attach the drive. Double sided tape is used between the motor bracket and the swingarm then 4 good quality cable ties are used to hold it in place from there. Keep in mind this an oddly...

Full suspension mountain bike Friction Drive

Finally running a serious MTB tire with a friction drive. Feels like the last piece to the puzzle. Selected a Specialised Butcher Grid 2.6" 29er. It's actually meant to be a front tire which isn't a bad thing as front tires tend to have a more aggressive tread pattern than rear tires. This...
