If you think about it, with all the lipos common in everyday items (cellphone, laptop, ipod, etc) its amazing this sort of thing doesn't happen more often. If all it takes is a faulty charger pretty much every household has many potential risks plugged in on a daily basis.
When you take life cycle into account lipo is clearly the better choice. NiMh often only make a few hundred cycles even if you treat them right. Lipo should be good for double that. Safety is kind of a deal breaker though. have you considered the A123 cells? The same amount of money will get you...
