Single-phase to 3-phase AC motor conversion

We had this old electric lawnmower. I don't remember what went wrong with it, but it was given to me to destroy. I want to use it as a motor for a potential e-bike conversion, and figured three-phase would give me more power and speed control. So I decided I'd attempt to rewind this motor for...

Post your pack (with a difference)

Haha, oh my! I only picked up on the alternative interpretation of the topic after reading your message  Yes, it is rather old. I didn't get it with any batteries and so am looking into Li-ion but it is fiendishly expensive :(. I don't want to waste my time with SLA. NiCd or NiMH are...

Post your pack (with a difference)

Good day, As part of a personal project, I'd like to get an idea of the construction of battery packs used by EV-ers, from e-bikes to e-cars. I have come across Fetcher's **POST YOUR PACK** thread, however, I am looking for more specific information and more results. My request applies to...

    Demographics?

21, male, unmarried, no kids, no job. Studying E&E engineering. Have an insane passion for electric vehicles, but no e-vehicle of my own, nor the money for one :( Other interests include (but not limited to) computers, programming, distributed computing, home automation, and renewable energy...

    eMercedes

Despite the flimsy-looking wheels, I think it looks stunning. Especially that profile, it's making me drool. Give it some proper wheels and tires and I'd love to have one. Sputnik 8)

    100,000 Sony batteries recalled

<Slowly and nervously glances at his Sony laptop sitting quietly on his desk that he purchased in 2006> Even though it's not a Hewlett-Packard, Toshiba or Dell... It still has a Sony battery, and a rubbish one too :( Sputnik :?

    Destroying motor by demagnetization

I've heard that exposing them to a large enough opposing magnetic field as well can cause them to lose their magnetism. I don't know how likely that is though. Sputnik

Ever regret lending out your bike/scooter?

I'm currently fixing up an e-scooter, it'll be the first EV I've ever owned and ever ridden. I'm really amped to get it done. Problem is, I have a friend who will most definately want to take it for a ride. This is a problem as he has already totalled his first car and is on his way to totalling...

    Gender?

There's a user (commanda) who signs off with "Amanda". I presume another point to the ladies. Can you imagine a girl lecturing about the various battery chemistries? Not that there's anything wrong with that. I fear this state will return to haunt me. I know of a girl in my engineering class...

A PWM Controller For Each Cell?

Does that mean, if you are drawing 30A from your pack, these caps have to support this current as well? You'll need beefy caps that'll hog valuable space. Sorry, your idea still eludes me. Sputnik

    Why not Nicad?

I think I may change to NiMH as I cannot find any NiCd of sufficient capacity locally. I've found 13Ah NiMH F cells but may go for some 9Ah D cells. Worse case I'll have to use 4Ah C cells :( (Cost and space considerations). But the site I'm looking at for cells states that NiCd has only 200...

    Why not Nicad?

I remember reading an article many years ago that mentioned when storing NiCd cells for extended periods of time, the cells must be in a discharged and cooled state. Not just discharged, but shorted across its terminals as well! The article mentioned slowly discharging to nearly 0V before...
