    Dead Makita (konion) BL1430 packs

OK. I have some packs from Dr Bass to work on, and Makita have said they'll give us some new ones too as sponsorship (impresive to see back-up like that - they aren't just supplying sponsorship drills as a loss-leader!). So I can compare new packs and old packs and refurb packs. No-one here got...

A Summary Letter for the ES Community

Like Jeremy Harris I've been busy doing green building and not geeking about EVs much - it soaks up a monstrous amount of time (I'm suspecting you are JSHarris on GBF), I've also been on a caving expedition so missed all the excitement. Anyway, just to say I second everything JH wrote. The...

    Dead Makita (konion) BL1430 packs

Ypedal: There was no evidence of moisture damage (corrosion, staining), but the packs are not waterproof and caving can be a little damp (actually in Austria it's normally quite dry, but pitches can be drippy and that's usually where you are drilling). We transport them (drill and batts) in a...

    Dead Makita (konion) BL1430 packs

Yes, we've opened them up - hoping that some cells could be saved, but in fact all 4 pairs were very low voltage. I've tried to charge the individual pairs with a bench supply, but they only took a few (~8) mA current for a while before taking no more (at 4.2V). The final voltages in one pack...

    Dead Makita (konion) BL1430 packs

We've been using stock BL1430 packs with Makita BHR162 for caving expedition work. They are now in their 4th year of use (~1 month each year) and two of our 4 packs died completely. (<2V on the pack). This is rather mysterious and I really don't know what killed them. A bit of research on the...

A different approach to battery management...

Ggodrum said: I've got one of these, as I needed some protection before the zephyr was ready. But I'd really like to use it in this permanently-installed mode. I assume that you aren't actually going to produce such a variant, as anyone wanting to do this should now be using the 4.4 zephyr...

    Building tppacks boards

OK, just a bit of an update. My hammond box finally arrived so I've now fitted a 20Way connector to the balancer and the other half to my LVC boards. Balancer working nicely. But I noticed whilst using it that one of the FAN431s on one LVC board was running really hot. A closer look showed that...

$0.32/Wh NiMh. Too good to be true?

You guys are a bit mean to NiCd/NiMH. I'ce used packs of these for many years for caving and bike lights and they make good packs which will run for many years. I wouldn't use them for a big ebike pack, I agree, and cell-reversal is a real issue with too many cells in series, but for relatively...

    My meanwell blew up

OK, parts arrived and I got round to doing some soldering. Replaced both mosfets with the STW204's I found at digikey eventually, and it worked fine. It's run at 340W for a hour or so with no trouble, and no excessive heat, so looks like those are a perfectly acceptable replacement. The bridge...

Blew my meanwells, polarity my ancient foe...

I spent ages working out some equivalents for this (as I blew mine up recently too). I bought GBJ2006-FDI-ND and DFB2060-ND from digikey in the end. As it happened only my mosfets had died so I haven't actually fitted and tested either of those, but they are the right size and a very...

    Building tppacks boards

OK, PSU has been fixed (replaced both main mosfets). Seems to work fine. So now I'm back to why my controller board isn't working quite right (which is probably why the PSU melted in the first place). So, the basic status is that I have 2 48V meanwell supplies (S-350-48) which have both had...

    My meanwell blew up

I think they are dead because they measure short circuit in both directions between the pins (with the diode-test mode of a meter). (actually of the 4 possible diode junctions you should see in 2 transistors, 1 of them still looks like a diode to my meter, so only 3 of them actualy melted :-)...

    My meanwell blew up

OK, so can someone tell me what a suitable replacement part is? (or where to get the 2SC3320). 2SC3320 datasheet: http://www.svntc.com/TPDF/2333.pdf Digikey have the KSC2751RTU http://media.digikey.com/pdf/Data%20Sheets/Fairchild%20PDFs/KSC2751pdf.pdf which is almost identical, but also...

    My meanwell blew up

Cheers for the clues. A new fuse just goes pop instantly so somethig is definately poorly. This schematic from http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=20118 is really handy: http://www.hordsoffun.com/ebike/pics/Meanwell_S-350-27.png Bridge seems OK, and resistors, but both big...

    Building tppacks boards

Mine has never gone orange either. Although I have had it throttled down to low-current mode. And now the PSU has died so I need to fix that before further investigation of the controller board.
