48V 20AH eBike battery made from model airplane batteries

Thank you all for the discussion on this subject. You have convinced me not to mess with battery building until I have a bit more experience, especially using model airplane LiPo's. Also, from what I have learned here, it appears my buddy is not someone I should be taking battery building advice from.

FWIW, all those hoverboard fires are 18650 packs with a bms. But after you throw the thing against the wall enough times learning to ride it,,,,, wouldn't recommend that with a hobby pack either.

Are you sure they're all 18650? I've seen teardowns of the higher priced units and they're 18650 based, but I haven't been able to find teardowns of the cheap knockoff brands that tend to catch fire more frequently. It wouldn't surprise me if they were using pouch type cells because they got a good deal on some seconds.

Oh man, speaking of battery fires, just this min a story comes on the news. A guys vape device has it's battery burst into flames in his pocket. You can see the flames shooting out like a roman candle. one 18650 cell.

The vapers abuse batteries in ways that drag racers only dream of... :/

Good. My job here is done. And, yes, I would take advice from him with a large grain of salt. Just because you can get away with something for a while does not mean it's a good idea.

Best bang for the buck is Luna cycle or em3ev. A plug and play solution with with quality cells. Get quality cells it's your best defense.
Yes 18650 cells can shoot fire out the top. I brought used konion cells and a few had fire come out the positive end. Where these drop or water damage and rust or ? But were returned as defective. Never try that again. I had cells Dean to lower voltage to play with and had sat in the corner. I was to take them for recycling the next or soon and burnt my garage. It's not worth it.
Buy new quality cells.

RC pouches are rocket fuel for rocket bikes.

If you have a commuter bike not a rocket bike, it's some additional risk for minimal benefits

Woah, you got a freaking fast bike, dude!!!

I'm beginning to resonate with what you have in your signature line about pollution no longer being fashionable. I got into eBiking mostly because our other car died and I wanted to see if I could be happy letting my wife have the only good car. What started out as a matter of necessity is becoming a bit of a passion with me. I'm really getting off on the idea that I can take care of 90% of what I must accomplish without spitting out greenhouse gasses and burning needless amounts of natural resources. Feeling like I'm doing my part for our planet and really getting a kick out of it.
