Grease for Bafang BBS01 available in Australia

To be fair I didn't actually read the SDS before putting red n tacky in my BBS02, I just saw a couple posts from others who used it and there seemed to be a consensus that it was OK. I just looked up the SDS and as far as can tell there's nothing that would interfere with the nylon gear (page...

Grease for Bafang BBS01 available in Australia

I would just grab some lithium grease from a local hardware or auto parts store. I considered ordering Mobil 28 but then I realized my BBS02 is not a turbine powered helicopter. This is what I used...5 bucks/tube at the local wally world. https://lucasoil.com/products/grease/red-n-tacky-grease

    My first DIY E-Bike

The frame-integrated motor definitely has a more OEM look than a retrofit BBSXX kits. I take it you got this from Aliexpress? If you don't mind, what's the price breakdown for the frame? Do you know the specs on the rear shock? It doesn't seem like it has a ton of travel based on the shaft...

Surly Instigator: Steel frame HT + Bafang BBS02 Mid-drive

I went the somewhat ghetto route of just heating up a nail and using that to cut a hole the width of the battery connector. The bag is double layered so that had the benefit of melting the layers on the edge of the hole. I think I'll try to find a grommet large enough (~1" ID) to fit the XT90 to...

Surly Instigator: Steel frame HT + Bafang BBS02 Mid-drive

The frame bag arrived the other day, as well as the ABS sheet. The Moosetreks is excellent quality and it easily swallows the battery. It doesn't fit the frame perfectly as the seat tube brace interferes with the top rear strap. I also need to make some type of internal support as the bottom...

    Stop-a-flat tubes

I've never used slime but both our mt bikes are set up tubeless. In several years I've only had 1 flat, which I didn't even notice until the day after the ride. Pulled out the thorn, added a little more sealant, pumped it back up, and it was good to go.

    bbs02 low top speed problem

Try holding up the rear tire and hitting the throttle for a 10-15 seconds. If you can hit 30+ mph with no load your issue is not software related.

    bbs02 low top speed problem

Are you confident your speedo is accurate? It wouldn't hurt to download a GPS app to double check - that will rule out any sensor issues. I'm hitting 25-27mph with my 30T chainring and 11T cog, so I would imagine you should be able to hit low 30s with the 48T.

VLR bumblebee AWD bike, ASC system, geared hubs.

That's certainly a unique creation. Finished product looks very polished so you definitely have some fabrication skills. With the generator you've basically created a hybrid motorcycle. Or rather a plug in hybrid. If there's no direct connection to the drivetrain it'd operate a la BMW I3 w/ a...

Surly Instigator: Steel frame HT + Bafang BBS02 Mid-drive

Thanks to snow and mud I've had limited riding time on dirt trails with the e-bike so far, but it's an absolute blast on flat smooth singletrack. You can hit downhill speeds with no hills. However I suspect it may not be as great on technical terrain due to the extra weight. Since the e-bike is...

Surly Instigator: Steel frame HT + Bafang BBS02 Mid-drive

Most of the OEM e-bikes I've seen go with a downtube-mounted battery. They might have other design considerations besides packaging but I would bet that's the primary factor. In my case, since I'm riding on rougher trails, I don't want the battery to act as a bashguard (especially given the...

Surly Instigator: Steel frame HT + Bafang BBS02 Mid-drive

That's an interesting idea. It would help clean the wiring up a little bit. Speaking of wiring, I think I'll reroute the controller cable along the top tube to better hide it. I thought about drilling a couple holes in the frame for internal routing but decided I'd rather not compromise the...

Surly Instigator: Steel frame HT + Bafang BBS02 Mid-drive

Well it didn't take long to break something. Not surprised the bag tore out given the $10 price point but I figured it'd last longer than it did. Now I'm on the hunt for something heavier duty. The Luna bag mentioned earlier might be strong enough but it's an eyesore IMO.

Surly Instigator: Steel frame HT + Bafang BBS02 Mid-drive

Not a bad idea on the water bottle seat post mount. I didn't see an SK specifically but Amazon sells a bunch of mounts like these <$10. A vertical bottle might interfere with the dropper post but a lot of these mounts let you rotate them...

Surly Instigator: Steel frame HT + Bafang BBS02 Mid-drive

I was hoping to adjust the cassette gearing (remove a couple middle gears, move the lowest gear inwards), as I can't really grab the lowest 2 gears without a really crooked chainline, but these spider-group sprockets put a stop to that.

Surly Instigator: Steel frame HT + Bafang BBS02 Mid-drive

Hopefully it's fairly subtle since e-bikes are not technically allowed on dirt trails in my county. I've since cut an opening in the frame bag to hide the wires. The charger has its own side now. A bonus of the frame bag is it can store my oversized smartphone that I hate carrying in my pants...

Surly Instigator: Steel frame HT + Bafang BBS02 Mid-drive

Thanks! If you want to contribute pedaling effort (especially at lower speeds), programming in smaller steps for the first few levels is definitely the way to go. The stock Luna programming started at 10% in level 1 and I believe the standard Bafang programming starts at 30%. Both of those are...

Surly Instigator: Steel frame HT + Bafang BBS02 Mid-drive

After a few decent rides, this battery pack seems to have a range of 30+ miles. Ride 1 was ~16 mi paved with some moderate hills and a 10-15 mph headwind at times, avg assist level was probably 5-6. Battery went from ~52v to start and finished ~42V, and I ended up pedaling a basically dead...

Surly Instigator: Steel frame HT + Bafang BBS02 Mid-drive

So it turns out the speed sensor does not work in a vertical orientation. Just removed the epoxy with a heat gun and will be redoing to get the sensor horizontal.

Surly Instigator: Steel frame HT + Bafang BBS02 Mid-drive

Recently finished (or mostly finished at least) my e-bike build, so I figured I'd make a quick thread. The bike is a 17" Surly Instigator 2.0 with 26" x 3" tires. Component spec is decent - Fox fork up front, Shimano SLX hydraulic brakes, and a 11-42 10 spd cassette with a Saint derailleur and...

    Heavy resistance bbs02

Bumping this thread. I just received my BBS02 from Luna and it's exhibiting the exact same "issue" demonstrated in the OP. Brand new motor, literally just took it out of the box and there is a surprising amount of effort required to turn the axle/cranks. Maybe I didn't research this...
