Surly Instigator: Steel frame HT + Bafang BBS02 Mid-drive

This bike was designed for "26+" which has the same diameter as 27.5, so those would even fit on a stock, unmodified bike. However with new dropouts I should have room to run an even larger 27.5 tire.

Surly Instigator: Steel frame HT + Bafang BBS02 Mid-drive

My first full suspension bike was actually a Maverick Durance I built up like 7 or 8 years ago. The ML8/Durance were dream bike status when they were new, it took a while for them to depreciate into my price range at the time. The "availability" of 26 tires was based on the + sizes, ~2.75-3.0...

CF or Glass Fiber over PVC Pipe

Or you can just quench it in cold water and it'll cool nearly immediately. I made some ~35 lb DIY kettlebells out of some cheap basketballs, concrete, and 1" schedule 40. After a year of usage, they're still holding up great. And if you don't have sand, you can use salt - the melting point is...

Surly Instigator: Steel frame HT + Bafang BBS02 Mid-drive

My rear tire is basically shot and I don't really want to spend $90 on an obscure and nearly obsolete tire size (26+), so I think I'll spend significantly more and convert the bike into a mullet: 29" front, 27.5" rear. If this calculator is accurate, I can run a 130mm 29er fork with minimal...

Battery Triangle Bag - Carbon Frame

You can probably find some stress models of various frames if you look hard enough. Unless it's compromised, carbon is extremely strong. A lot of frames will say they're meant for <225-250lb riders. A 250lb rider is going to put far more stress on the frame than a 150lb rider with 15lbs of...

Battery Triangle Bag - Carbon Frame

Horizontal seams and along the zippers are exactly where mine failed (as well as the straps on the 2nd one). 1st was a $10 bag, 2nd was 3-4x that. I got less than 5 miles from bag 1 on moderate single track, and <20 from bag 2 on rougher trails. I will say this was partially [mostly?] my fault...

Off Road Battery Size recommendation for BBSHD

I have a BBS02 so a bit less torque but the throttle is great when moving to get a boost of speed to clear rough stuff ahead. It's just jarring from a dead stop though - hard to use it smoothly. The trails around here generally close when they're muddy, but if not, it's poor etiquette to ride...

Battery Triangle Bag - Carbon Frame

Yes you can sit on the top tube without damage :) I could and did when I had my carbon intense recluse (although that's a little burlier than the standard XC bike). If static body weight was enough to damage a frame, you'd hear stories left and right about them breaking on even mild trails...

Off Road Battery Size recommendation for BBSHD

So I like the throttle set permanently at 9 however it's a bit of a handful climbing technical trails. Particularly when starting from a stop and there's a bunch of baby heads immediately ahead. I probably look like a novice trying to ride a motorcycle lol. Front tire will lift slightly, bike...

Battery Triangle Bag - Carbon Frame

As long as you're well below the max rider weight for the bike, I wouldn't worry about it. You might want to consider if you really need a battery that size though. Unless you're doing mega rides of 30-40+ miles or want to ride all the time at max assist, it's a waste.

Bike racks and ISCG chain guides

Moving soon so I'm trying to get rid of my old roof racks. Intended for use with quick release skewer forks and cross bars with 't tracks'. Not sure how popular these will be with the e-bike crowd, but figured I'd list them anyway. $50 + shipping. Chain guides are $25 shipped to the lower 48...

    Does this seem legit?

I'm not very familiar with hub motors but a mid drive with half the power can hit low to mid 30s on a mountain bike. Doesn't seem like too much of a stretch for this to hit ~40 with skinny tires. And speaking of tires note this wheel says it's for "700x28" tires. So you'll need a 29er frame if...

Luna Cycle Full Grip Throttle Issue

Glad you posted this. I don't have a twist throttle but the thumb throttles I've used also don't have much play before engagement and probably have the same internal components. I've had the bike try to run away from me on a few occasions where I hit the throttle by mistake when walking it -...

Full suspension bikes compatible with a frame battery

2015 rocky mountain altitude 730 large frame. 27.5 wheels. CL price $1100 - this particular bike needs a lot of work and doesn't have particularly high end parts, but a nicer specced model seems like it'd make a good conversion candidate.

Surly Instigator: Steel frame HT + Bafang BBS02 Mid-drive

Unfortunately the Adventx cassette design isn't well suited to regearing - the pins will have to be drilled out. I don't really want to destroy a brand new part but I probably will.

Surly Instigator: Steel frame HT + Bafang BBS02 Mid-drive

Yeah it definitely isn't recommended. The cog thickness difference was less than .2mm which might've been out of the shifter's tolerance range. My only concern with removing sprockets is I'm going to have at least 1 shift with a 40% minimum jump in ratio and I'm not sure how that will affect...

Surly Instigator: Steel frame HT + Bafang BBS02 Mid-drive

I played around with that idea the other week, trying to mix and match sprockets from 8 and 10 speed cassettes, along with some spacers cut from 1.25" PVC (fun fact: that fits perfectly around a Shimano freehub) to make a 8 speed cassette with 10 speed spacing. It didn't work. I don't know if...

Surly Instigator: Steel frame HT + Bafang BBS02 Mid-drive

Dropouts came in today and I finally installed the AdventX. Very easy install with the right hanger. Earlier I said shifts weren't that crisp - that was based on just playing around with the shifter unloaded. While actually riding the bike the shifting feels pretty nice. As good or better than...

Off Road Battery Size recommendation for BBSHD

I replaced the throttle with the standard universal thumb one and at the same time, changed the voltage to start at 11 and end at 42, with 5% start current. I also changed the throttle level to be fixed at assist level 9. There's a lot more modulation than I had before (no idea if it's the new...

    Best 26 in tires

My bike is 26+ (50mm rims) and I've found that trail tires in the 2.75-3.0 range are extremely limited, both in selection and availability. It's basically the Surly Dirt Wizard and WTB Ranger. Dirt Wizards are 90 bucks/pop and Rangers are $60+. There's a few DH-focused tires available in the...

Off Road Battery Size recommendation for BBSHD

I think this is the best advice. I've spent several hours researching this topic for both my smartphone and e-bike pack and ultimately decided it's not worth it to try and eke out a little extra life. Running an e-bike battery only between 80 & 40% really is not practical for recreation...
