Unite MY1018Z - multiple motor mounting schemes

I had to go to Walmart anyway and they have the Currie bike there so I took a couple of closeup pics.. Sorry the pics are a bit blurry, I didn't want to attract a lot of attention with the flash and the lighting isn't as good as all that. The plate thickness is about 0.175 ". It looks like...

Larger chainring and freewheel crank question..

Hi Miles, I saw you had Echo cranks on your immaculate build. :) Are you aware of any directions for fabbing a freewheel for the chainring/crank? I need pictures because I tend to think visually and I don't recall ever having a freewheel apart to see how it's made. Fabbing parts is not a...

Mounting your battery, Center of Gravity.

I tend to agree, think of balancing a dowel on the end of your finger, when the dowel is long it's much easier to balance than when it is short. I too have noticed that I have a hard time riding my bikeE 'bent slowly, I'm all over the place trying to climb steep hills..

Using RC motors on E-bikes [Archive]

The reason the shafts are hardened is so they will not bend so easily.. Putting a prop in the dirt is a not uncommon occurrence and when you do you stand an excellent chance of bending the motor shaft. Hardened shafts are not stiffer but they are considerably more resistant to permanent...

Larger chainring and freewheel crank question..

My bikeE recumbent has a 20" rear wheel, a SRAM three speed hub, an 11 tooth small sprocket and a 44 tooth chainring. To make a powerful ebike with the kind of top speed I'm looking for (~35 mph) and still drive through the chain and gears will require a freewheel crank and a larger chainring...

    aluminum steel or carbon fiber???

One point regarding fabricating a "box" type of frame for an ebike.. A technique I've used before is to mock up everything I'm going to make from aluminum plate with 1/4" masonite (a hard chipped and bonded wood product) and then use the masonite templates with a bearing guided router to cut my...

Using RC motors on E-bikes [Archive]

Eh, if I try the controller and it doesn't work I could still get most of my money back by selling it on ebay.. Come to think of it, if I "sell the sizzle", I could maybe even make a profit, there are very few HV RC controllers on ebay and I sell a lot of stuff there and have gotten pretty good...

Using RC motors on E-bikes [Archive]

That's the entire idea behind gearing, keep the motor in an efficient range. Powering the crank is a good way to do it, if the motor is appropriately geared to the crank then all you have to do is shift to keep your cadence and you are automatically in an efficient operating regime of the motor...

Using RC motors on E-bikes [Archive]

A few interesting components I found for an RC based E-bike. First, a high voltage (for RC) 100A controller for $99.99: http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=6550&Product_Name=TURNIGY_Sentilon100A_HV_2-12S_(USA_Warehouse) Next, a cheap high power motor that may...

    aluminum steel or carbon fiber???

An RC motor and gearing of equivalent power to the Crystalyte is going to weigh closer to four or five pounds than fifteen. If you're going to all the trouble of a custom carbon fiber frame then why not do the job in style and have an RC motor driving through the gears for high efficiency in...

20 million e-bikes sold in china last year

One of the reasons Americans need speed in an ebike is due to auto traffic, where I ride there are narrow roads with no shoulders and often a near vertical dropoff for twenty to forty feet as soon as you get off the road. A two lane road with a lot of traffic is very dangerous when the drivers...

Potential of the new SRAM 2 speed crankset gear

I have an electric winch whose reduction gears look a lot like the epicyclic gears in that crank. Heavy duty sucker, but noisier than all get out.

    The Linear (recumbent) Booster

Nice job.. It seems to me that adding a few more cells to your pack might be a cheaper and easier way to get your cadence up, with the added benefit of giving you more power.

    Would you sell your ebike?

Right offhand I can't think of anything I've ever built that I haven't eventually sold. Here's my first custom cafe' racer, before and after.. I built this in 1980, disassembled it right down to the spokes, polished, painted and tricked out everything. A 1972 Yamaha R5 350 two stroke twin.. I...

    kurts E bike

That's nice, but the bolt heads or the nuts are going to interfere with the motor(s) unless you countersink your holes and use flush screws. That motor plate doesn't look that thick and I think you might not have enough stock to do that with very successfully.

    kurts E bike

Ah, that looks right. There are a couple of ways you can go about it then, the simplest would be to make some fairly heavy joining plates from something like 3/16 or 1/4 x 1" bar stock you can get at the hardware store. Cut and drill the bar stock and then use bolts, nuts and washers to put it...

A few heavy duty power diodes in series makes an excellent more-or-less constant voltage dropper.. Use a switch to cut them out once the battery voltage has sagged below your critical threshold. Figure about 0.5V per diode.

    kurts E bike

A couple of small steel plates you could cut with a hacksaw or saber saw, some bolts/nuts/washers and and drill with a bit or two, it shouldn't be all that difficult to do. I can't quite figure out how the plate mounts on the bike or I could be a good bit more specific. I agree, that would be...

    Semi Infinite Battery

A three phase BLDCPM motor will work just fine as a three phase alternator, just pick a motor that will have sufficient back emf to charge your battery pack at the rated rpm of the IC engine you choose to drive it with.

    * * * Performance To Speed Ratio * * *

I've long thought that the safest vehicle is one that does not ever become involved in a collision in the first place. The great majority of "accidents" aren't accidents at all and could be prevented with greater attention paid to the task of driving. In a more maneuverable vehicle you have a...

Can someone tell me how to post photos?

Tinypic.com is ridiculously easy to use. http://www.tinypic.com/ The first thing is to make sure you have the pictures somewhere in your computer that you can find them, know what directory and subdirectory they are in. Then go to the tinypic url I linked above and click on the "browse"...
