Matt also makes this gorgeous two stage drive (three stage if you count the chain to bottom bracket). Having a tiny drive sprocket for more reduction is better than a tiny drive pully. At least the chain will stay engaged and not skip. The best solution is an additional reduction stage so you're...

Look at what our own Spinning Magnets has been up to in his spare time. The sly dog has gone and written a review of the GNG mid drive for electricbike.com! http://www.electricbike.com/gng/

Very informative post, Chalo. Thanks for that. I just received a PM from Cyclebutt asking what my adjustable sheets are made from. I posted that info some time ago but will post again to keep the info somewhat current. The sheets are made from high quality American cold rolled 12 gauge sheet...

There's hot dip galvanization and electrogalvanization. Here's a home tin-zinc electroplating kit for $70: http://www.eastwood.com/ew-electroplating-system-tin-zinc.html An excerpt from Wikipedia: The majority of hardware parts are zinc plated, rather than cadmium plated." I have no idea...

    GNG, 1000W 48V BB-drive, $400

I read up a bit. I think you're right, speedmd. I think of zinc plating in terms of 'galvanizing' which is a dull silver finish. You can put zinc plated parts into a tumbler to polish them or use any other method you'd use to polish metal. Polished zinc looks a lot like chrome but is not as...

    GNG, 1000W 48V BB-drive, $400

:D I think the finish on the GNG is just industrial chrome. It's a pretty common finish. It should be available in almost any major commercial town. It may cost you more than the sheets however. Most plating shops don't do an Endless-Sphere discount.

Yep, you are correct sir. That's the way it's set up. Thanks for the explanation, Chalo.

Also, remember that "left" or "right" is dependent on which way you are looking at the bike. We think of it from a rider's position. The Chinese may be thinking in terms of facing the bike from the front.

    GNG, 1000W 48V BB-drive, $400

The sticker on my GNG bb is oriented the same way. That's how I got my initial photos and measurements oriented with the lock ring on the right. Also the crank does NOT want to go onto the longer tapered square on the fixed flange side spindle. It makes sense that the longer side would be on the...

Thanks for catching that, full-throttle. Everything is correct now, including the drawing with dimensions.

No. I had the sides reversed. I revised everything. The drawing with dimensions and the new photos are now correct. chainwheel side: 1.45" or 36.83mm from edge of fixed flange on cup to farthest point of spindle. left side: 1.38" or 35.05mm from threaded cup outside edge to farthest point of...

    GNG second trials build

Very cool build. I love bicycles that are inspired by motorcycles. I want a bike that's somewhere in between a modern motard and a classic board track racer. I like the big wheeled, stripped down mechanical look of the board trackers and the street motocrosser feel of the motards. I'll keep...

GNG Bottom Bracket: Edit: This is oriented as if you are on the bike looking down at it. Chainwheel and front freewheel are on the right side. Edit: The factory sticker on the bottom bracket saying "L" and "R" is not referring to the left and right side of the BB or the bike. It's referencing...

I'm hoping that 15mm will be adequate for 2 kW and below. The 20mm belts are used by 125cc 2 stroke racing go-karts. It's nice to know they're available- just in case. The last of the adjustable sheet orders that have been paid for will go out tomorrow. Out of 16 orders I only had one forum...

    GNG, 1000W 48V BB-drive, $400

I've had the chainrings off and seen the freewheel. I'm sure you're right. They had to come up with a bolt pattern that would fall in between the 16 sprocket teeth on the freewheel.

    GNG, 1000W 48V BB-drive, $400

JPO and I have been discussing the benefits of running a larger driven pulley/sprocket with freewheel on the primary side and then running a smaller drive sprocket sans freewheel on the secondary side. The small amount of pedaling drag from turning the jackshaft seems worth the gearing...

Thanks for all of your work on this throttle issue. I hate controls that don't work smoothly. Have you spent much time with the Magura and the stock controller? It seems like you're concentrating on GNG two magnets throttle/stock controller and Magura/Lyen. How many volts are you running with...

    GNG, 1000W 48V BB-drive, $400

Speaking for myself, I'm looking for the weaknesses in the cheap Chinese products that could justify doing something similar, but made to a higher standard. "Crap drives out quality" has never been more true than it is today. After people have had some experience with goods built to a price I...

    GNG, 1000W 48V BB-drive, $400

The drive pulley is machined from the same piece of steel as the rotor spindle. It's all one piece. The only way to fix this mess is to machine (or use the motor's rotation and a file, as some people have been doing) the pulley section of the steel spindle down to 10 or 11 mm. Then you can fit...

I received an e-mail from an engineer at Gates Corp. that I have been communicating with about our belt problems. I sent him pictures of the small 14T drive pulley and also attached my diagram showing how the pulley teeth have a flat top with sharp edges. This was his response: "The sprocket...

Bzhwindtalker's Blue FR (GNG mid drive)

Great thread, Windtalker! You really do have a talent for video. Your biking videos are some of the best I've seen. Mechanical Engineering is still probably a smarter career move though... I really don't at all want in on the argument about what kind of bike is 'best'. I do want to build a full...

The eBay ad says that adaptor is for an 11mm shaft. The shaft on the GNG jackshaft appears to be 14mm. I haven't had the small freewheel off since it's one of the only things I don't have an issue with (yet). The large primary cog sprocket on the other end is a locking nut with shaft key.

GNG 450 brushless Mid Drive - Primary Drive Modifications

IMO the sharp teeth on the small drive gear are a result of using a round nosed cutting bit on the cylinder of steel that the entire rotor spindle is machined from. They make longitudinal cuts and don't bother to radius the top of the cog (which engages the base of the belt cog). Easy, lazy...
