    Motor/Controller Troubleshooting

I'm having an intermittent cutout and buzzing problem with my BMC V2-S, using a Crystalyte 25A analog controller and an 18S battery pack, limited to 17A with a cycle analyst. I got a simple LED hall tester from Ilia. Here are the video results - all 3 LEDs blink when the wheel is turned...

First E-Bike Build: Surly Karate Monkey, BMC, LiPo, IGH

Just finished up a fabulous summer of commuting. 4700 miles on the odometer, 3200 for the year so far. I freaking love this bike! I bought a scooter helmet, the HJC IS-33, which is also great. Much quieter and no more blurry eyes the whole way home. I think I'll take the hub apart once the...

Why is my bottom bracket unscrewing?

Sorry to say you welded your BB shell backwards. The lockrings should be on the non-drive side. The reason there are left-hand and right-hand threads is to prevent loosening. Try loctite?

First E-Bike Build: Surly Karate Monkey, BMC, LiPo, IGH

Update - after several months avoiding fixing this ("It's ski season! Replacing FETs is hard! I'll just drive to work!") I'm back on the e-bike. -Ordered FETs, tried replacing them (difficult soldering). Tested it with a known-good throttle and instantly blew the controller again on first...

    disassemble a crystalyte controller

You need to get all the screws out of the bottom before the guts will slide out of the enclosure. Here's an illustrated guide: http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=764&start=15

Is it normal for a CA to drain lots of power?

The drain is probably from leaving your controller on, with the batteries at 3.0V / cell (you're running 20S, right?). They quickly dropped off the LiPo cliff with the minimal drain of the controller. Set your controller cutoff to 3.5V/cell (70V) to be safe next time. You'll still have...

First E-Bike Build: Surly Karate Monkey, BMC, LiPo, IGH

The good: Over 1500 miles on the bike now. Got my SpokePOV kits assembled and mounted. They're super bright! The bad: Got my studded tires mounted... and lost 25% of the studs on the first commute. Schwalbe Marathon Winters, I'll have to call the supplier. I was trying to take it easy...

What is wrong with this picture?

I think can be solved entirely by changing your mounting technique. I worked in a bike shop for six years, repaired hundreds of flats in that time. 1) Inflate up to 20psi. Spin the tire. Check for bulges / high spots / low spots, where the bead isn't seated right. 2) Push the tire around...

Has anyone measrued the temp of their FETs under load?

You could also roll your own with an Arduino ($30) + Data logger shield ($20) + Thermocouple ($10) + Thermocouple Amp ($17) + LCD ($10) + enclosure ($10?). I'm heading down this path, just for fun. https://www.adafruit.com/products/243 https://www.adafruit.com/products/269

How many miles does your disc pad last?

I'm at 1400 miles on my Avid BB7's, and I've adjusted them twice. Probably less than half dead.

    Fun way to commute?

My commute is 23 miles each way, mostly flat but with significant headwinds sometimes. I'm running a 600W hub motor at 1400W, going 30-40mph depending on wind. It takes me 50 minutes each way, and I use 70% of my 1000 watt-hour pack. And I pedal! Build an electric bike, something with more...

Rochester Institute of Technology-Electric Drag Race

Wow, what a nightmare... How are you going to slow down from (60? 100?)mph with no runout? And yes, you should get clarification on whether or not the driver must ride in the vehicle :)

How much Capacity do you have on hand ? Wh

All true, but you weren't using more than 70% of the capacity of your pack. If you're trying to calculate capacity with an "area under the trapezoid" method, you need to use the average voltage over a full discharge cycle.

Have a Kona Ute, recommend me a setup?

I'm running 700x60 Schwalbe Big Apples on my Karate Monkey, and the Planet Bike Cascadia fenders just barely clear them. The 700x50's are available too. Personally I like the big wheels for hitting potholes & cracks in the road at speed in the dark. Smoother ride. But I bet the lower CG with...

First E-Bike Build: Surly Karate Monkey, BMC, LiPo, IGH

Well, I missed the 1000 mile mark, so here's the 1147 mile update. Two months in, it's getting colder, and I'm still commuting 4 days a week! Salsa Gordo rims installed, 35mm wide vs. the old 24's. Much less sidewall flex at 40psi with the big fat 60mm tires, and less fear of tacoing. And...

    Server power supplies in series!

    Here are some photos of the Dell DPS-500-CB chargers I'm using. 12V 41A. I connected the pins in a pattern like this: N N N N N N N N N N Y N N N N Y N N N N Y N N N I isolated the -12V from chassis ground by cutting two jumpers, J920 and J921 on the upper & lower halves of the case, near...

How much Capacity do you have on hand ? Wh

I grabbed it off google images. Some people have posted similar graphs here, using RC chargers that can produce such discharge curves. Here's a better one from Neptronix: http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=33335&hilit=lipo+cliff&start=15#p485023

e bike crashes, whats your experiences

Yikes! Gnarly crash! I hope you heal quickly. Do you have e-brake levers wired to the controller cutoff? I consider them essential safety equipment.

How much Capacity do you have on hand ? Wh

So you're using 4.0V per cell for LiPo? I would use 3.8V to calculate capacity, given these discharge curves: I'm running 18S3P with 5AH packs, so that's 18*3.8*3*5 = 1,026 WH.

Best Double Kickstand To Purchase (Widest)

I bought a Pletscher but it won't fit my bike. My 700x60 tires (2.35" wide) and short chainstays spaced widely just don't play nicely with it. Edit - sold locally, never mind.

Open Source "CA" for Arduino something to begin?

Funny you posted this, I just ordered my first Arduino with the eventual goal of rolling my own CA. I have a CA, and it's great, but I wish a few things were different :) For me this isn't about saving money, it's about learning by building something.

    Hyperion EOS 1420i NET3 14s Balance Charger...

My 1420i at home is making bad fan noises when it starts up... groaning, I would call it. After about a minute the noise goes away, but I don't think it's healthy. I transported this charger by bike for about a month before I bought another one so I could leave them at home & work. Any...
