ebiker meet and greet in DC

This Friday turns out to be no good for me making it into the city, but hopefully next time. Still have yet to come across another ebiker out here in the western suburbs.

    tire replacement options

Been pretty happy with the Michelin Pilot Spot 2.3" tires. My rear one is almost bald after 1,600 miles, but I like the performance and looks. Only 1 slow leaking flat in that time despite riding through plenty of broken glass that accumulates on the under-used bike paths around here...

ebiker meet and greet in DC

I might be able to do next Friday. Out in the Tysons Area for work, but I could take a field trip into the city.

    OutbackHack's Cannondale Hardtail 29er build

Putting the wraps on version 2.0 Based on an older Kona Kikapu 26" FS frame that will hopefully handle the rough bike trails around here that were tough on my hardtail. Also reconfigured the Ping battery & mount so that the whole thing setup is only 4" at it's widest point, down from 6", so...

DC residents: Is this plan crazy? *update* No it's not

Getting from Dulles to the W&OD is definitely going to be your biggest challenge, that area has mostly non-existent shoulders and fast heavy traffic. Might be worth finding alternative transportation to get closer to the bike trail and save the stress. Other than that it sounds like a great...

    Ping Battery Elective Surgery

Correct, all 16 groups get above 3.65v and the BMS brings all the higher ones back down to around 3.6v. Before I made the modification last week it was a very balanced pack with about 70 cycles. My concern is that the cells are briefly getting up to 3.95v-4.0v which I believe is too high for...

    Ping Battery Elective Surgery

So the procedure initially seemed like a success, but a problem has cropped up now after charging, balancing, lightly discharging the pack. The 4p cell groups (4&5) on either side of the split are charging faster than the rest of the pack, hitting 3.8-3.9v before the charger shuts down. The BMS...

    Ping Battery Elective Surgery

Thanks for the tip about removing some solder, I didn't think there was a tab folded over in the middle of the board but after looking more closely it looks like there is one or more there. Was able to melt and remove a little of the solder last night, but I don't think my 40w iron is up to the...

    Ping Battery Elective Surgery

Thinking of taking the plunge and attempting to split one of my Ping batteries in half for v2.0 of my ebike. I want to keep the battery almost entirely in the front-triangle, but this time keep it narrow enough (4" instead of 6") that I can pedal comfortably and the only way to do that is going...

    GCinDC's Scott Nitrous 20

Nice looking bike, too bad it slipped through my DC Craigslist filter and you got it instead of me :)

    OutbackHack's Cannondale Hardtail 29er build

Rebuilt the rear wheel with 13/14g spokes w/ washers and an Alex Supra-D welded downhill rim. Hopefully it proves to be stronger than the stock one. Also made a frame mounted battery holder to move the 22lb battery from the rear rack to the front triangle. Riveted & epoxied together...

    OutbackHack's Cannondale Hardtail 29er build

Data from the first 33 cycles of my Ping battery. Pleased to see wh/mile averaging only 29.7 vs the ebike.ca simulator which put it over 40.

    GCinDC's Giant DH Comp

Looks like it's not a good week for spokes in DC. I had just watched your video earlier today and then get home to find 3 broken spokes. http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=39854#p582438

    OutbackHack's Cannondale Hardtail 29er build

Rolled over 700 miles today and started hearing a new sound coming from the rear wheel. Didn't see anything wrong at first, and just assumed it was the rear brake rotor making more noise that usual. 30 miles later I make it home and take a closer look to find 3 broken spokes. Each one spaced...

    OutbackHack's Cannondale Hardtail 29er build

Had to up the gearing so I could pedal at 30+mph. Couldn't find a suitable 4 bolt chainring or 5 bolt crankset that was both compatible with my bottom bracket and/or would clear the wide mountain bike chainstays. So I went with this accident waiting to happen. It's held up for 200 miles so...

    PING BMS light stuck on

Unfortunately (but understandably), Ping asked me to send the damaged one back to him. I would have kept it and tried to repair it, but given how tiny the components are I didn't think my odds of success with the tools I have were that high, so I took Ping up on the offer of a replacement.

    PING BMS light stuck on

Just to post a follow up. Ping was just as helpful as people have reported here, and I had a new BMS in my mailbox in just over a week. Wired it up and put it though a couple cycles now and looks like the new one is working fine. I've since soldered the two wires together that join the split...

    PING BMS light stuck on

Yes, the pack is divided into 2 sub-packs. Ping supplied the pack with an XT150 connector (which has no retention clips to keep it together) on the wires joining the packs. In retrospect I remember a sentence buried in the instructions about making sure this wire didn't disconnect while in...

    PING BMS light stuck on

Just heard back from Ping, he confirmed it was a BMS issue and said that the likely cause was the wire that joins the split battery pack worked loose. When I inspected it the wire was still connected, but not seated all the way, it could have been loose enough to cause an intermittent cutout in...

    PING BMS light stuck on

I figured out how to get what I think is a correct reading out of the last cell in the pack by subtracting all the other measured individual cell voltages from the total pack output and got 3.33v. Since that's exactly what the others were all outputting I'm inclined to be believe that it's...

    PING BMS light stuck on

Forgot to mention, I've unplugged all the wires for now to prevent the BMS from draining the battery till I can resolve this.

    PING BMS light stuck on

About to email Ping about this issue, but wanted to throw it out here to the forum to see what people think. Halfway through my 2nd test ride today with my new PING 48v20ah pack I noticed that one of the LEDs on the BMS was lit up. My first thought (based on my limited understanding of BMS's)...

    What did Ping send me?

Ever had any luck tracking down those connectors? I'm in the same boat, just received my battery today and need to extend the balancing wires so that I can distribute the 2 parts between my panniers. Could always cut them off and replace the connectors, but it'd be nice to not have to do that.

Newbie Questions - Double Check My Specs

Took the bike out for the first longish test ride yesterday, 10 miles. Power consumption averaged around 33Wh/mile I think, which is a bit below ebikes.ca simulator's forecast of 39Wh/mile. But it was a short ride, so time will tell if the average ends up being higher. Top speed on the flats...
