    ADEN-Sports, Power Kit Race (Review+Pictures)

PowerKit Pro is one motor, PowerKit Race is two. 2500-3600 euros. Not cheap. Cool design, though, for sure. Regarding pedaling: I'm with you. For me, that's a definition of an ebike, as compared to a motorcycle/enduro/scooter built on a bike frame. I have to be able to meaningfully pedal at a...

Project: Home made velomobile design with crank or mid motor

It depends on the regime of motion through the air. With one exception, all of the examples you list are transonic. The exception is the bullet train example, but they do not, in fact, have pointy noises. They're smooth curves. For example, compare the nose of an A-10 to an F-15.

Project: Home made velomobile design with crank or mid motor

I don't think I've ever been as excited to see what happens when a build is finished as I am with this one! Absolutely amazing work. I like the red color scheme with the Z logo.

Your Creation's Before & After Pics

That is a gorgeous bike. Well done! Can you share any of the technical fabrication details? I have little welding experience, but I aspire to do custom frames like this. What kind of equipment did you use? What kind of jigs did you make/use, if any.

Dark Side Time, but which way to go?

My bike is not a scratch build--it's pretty standard. But here's my perspective on long tail (cargo) bikes: I recommend them! I use mine for commuting (about 20 miles round trip), and I really love having the cargo space. I usually need to take a bunch of stuff back and forth (computer, books...

Your Creation's Before & After Pics

So far, I'm pleased, with the caveat that these are the only batteries I've ever owned (it's my first ebike). My main reason for choosing them is the light weight of NiCoMn: the 13Ah pack I have only weighs 8.8lbs. That helps keep my total bike weight at around 60lbs, which, if you check around...

    Schwalbe Big Apple 26"

Thanks, Chalo. Sound engineering advice, as I've come to expect from you. BTW, I'm starting a new project that will bring me to Austin occasionally. Perhaps we can meet for a beer and e-bike mini-nerdfest. :)

    Schwalbe Big Apple 26"

Hi Chalo: As I mentioned a few posts above, I've been reading your comments on this topic for some time and am going to experiment, but I'm very risk averse regarding pinch flats, especially on the rear since I do carry a fair amount of cargo. Currently, I have my BAs at 45/40 psi rear/front on...

    2WD Electric Yuba Mundo Build

Yes... I meant "required if you want temperature measurements". If you don't disable them, then one has to have a motor with a temp sensor installed. The CA V3 does not solve this problem for the end user. Point being: CA V3 just makes it easier to use the temp data, but it doesn't actually...

    2WD Electric Yuba Mundo Build

Well... that's confusing. I thought the CA V3 required a temp sensor installation, anyway, since it just displays the sensor's output (and can use it as a temperature-controlled throttle limiter). In any case, yes, I will keep everyone informed of my (mis)adventures in this area!

    2WD Electric Yuba Mundo Build

Thanks very much, telektik, for the detailed reply and suggestions. I know how to pretty effectively search ES (using google or similar), and already have a bunch of controller setup threads bookmarked. But as you say, there's not really a single canonical source for this info. It may not be...

    Schwalbe Big Apple 26"

Yikes. I would not expect small stones to do that. I will be more vigilant. Especially if you do the "dutch method" :D I was impressed and then concerned about how thin the BA sidewalls are. It's quite impressive tech, but, man, it's really thin! So I found some 2.3-2.5 thorn tubes and put...

    2WD Electric Yuba Mundo Build

Ah! Very interesting. I still am at the bottom end of my learning curve regarding controllers (I get the basics of PWM, but don't know squat about how the devices are actually built). On my BMC+Lyen powered bike there is a pleasing low growl as the bike starts up, so I would consider it...

    Schwalbe Big Apple 26"

I have BAs 26X2.35" on my Troll/Xtracycle. I put the 29er Cascadia fenders on since they're 65 mm (2.56 in), and they fit and look great. There's plenty of room on the front (the Troll fork has massive clearance), and even though the fit was tighter on the Xtracycle, the rear fender went on...

    2WD Electric Yuba Mundo Build

Re: Lyen controllers... what does "modified for gear motor use" actually mean? I have one of these from Ilia on my cargo bike (with a BMC V2T).

Nice looking ride, GCinDC! I assume that's a motorcycle wheel and tire on the back? I'll have to go read through your build thread to get the particulars.

DIY build prep shopping list advice

I support going with the steel frame (with the caveat that I just built my first ebike, so I'm no "expert"). I just narrowly avoided a disaster with my old 7005 frame. Granted, it was an old frame. And, granted, in a racing bike the weight difference might be significant. But for a...

    Phoenix Rising: P1

Thanks, Kingfish, for the detailed design/build info. The diagrams are great! This is a very timely update, since I am learning/thinking about what I want to do with my wiring between now and spring, and I really have little knowledge about electrical power system design and fabrication. My...

    YAXC (Yet Another Xtracycle Conversion)

OK. That's what I thought. Still, the efficiency improvement for the mid-drive was much greater than I thought it would be. That's what I keep telling myself, dogman! :) :D very funny... in a "so funny it hurts" sort of way. I live in a college town, and we have annual flea market type...

    YAXC (Yet Another Xtracycle Conversion)

I agree. That is not enough to make a big diference. That's why I sprung for the Watts Up. It was 35 bucks I think. There might be cheaper ones on ebay. But it gives me an independent reading that matches my CA pretty closely. Well... that is odd. Or is it? Not enough experience to speak...

    YAXC (Yet Another Xtracycle Conversion)

I know what you mean, pdf. It seems high--not outlandishly high, mind you, but definitely on the high end. On the other hand, yours is pretty darn low. I do think the mid-drive makes a big difference, or can make a big difference if you shift correctly. Also, if you look at power consumption...

    Kudos Build II

True. I'm using a teeny dab of lock tight to hold them. So far it works... meh. I still have to futz with it some more since the squeal is diminished but not gone. Oh, and thanks for that enginerd term "fettle"! Three+ decades as an engineer, and it's new to me (probably cuz I'm more of a theory...
