Hub motor with built in batteries.

Well, let's see... No rear brake, mono-geared, minimal battery capacity, and except for downhills it's a lot of work to pedal because your legs are the extremely inefficient charger. Probably not going to catch on, IMHO...

    E-Bike theft

Titanium (alloy) is not particularly hard - not much more difficult to cut than aluminum, manufacturers claims to the contrary. An angle grinder will make short work of it. It is only strong when the same weight of metal is compared vs. steel, because Ti is light...

    RFID Keyswitch

This is an interesting project, and I completely agree that a locked cutoff switch is mandatory on any ebike, but RFID sure seems like a lot of complexity. There are much simpler more reliable approaches to the issue. This is a keyed lock from McMaster-Carr, inset into the bar-end. It cuts...

Outlaw SS? Stromer ST1? What to get?

For contrast, I bought a Volton Alation 500 a couple of months ago, and like it a lot. It's powerful, stealthy, and has decent components. Mine had an issue with spoke lacing on the front wheel, and the vendor quickly reimbursed me for having the wheel rebuilt locally. It's quite a nice bike at...

New project with a special bike

The seat looks awfully far back over the contact patch - I'd be concerned about wheelies with a rear-wheel drive of any kind.

Except for the scuba-diving tank on your back...

Switch? (keyed) & discovered a problem

This seems like a really good idea. I'm thinking it could avoid having some moron wander up to the bike while it's chained, then twisting the throttle just to see what happens - I have a mental picture of broken spokes flying all over the place, and then the bike launches, using the hub motor...

    Cane Creek Thudbuster LT Review

That's awful - you're only talking about 100-150 hours of use, and the bushes wear out? Contrast that with any usual mechanical bushing, which one would expect to last for thousands of hours. They must be using cheese for the bushing material.

Flykly, Roola, Electron, Zehus, Copenhagen all in 1 ewheels

"36v, claims 30mile range" - the usual BS. That's 20 miles of pedal-only range, and 10 using the motor. Back here in reality, 325wH of battery is not going to be taking you 30 miles, unless it's all downhill.

    Cane Creek Thudbuster LT Review

One does, of course, need 4"-6" of unused seatpost to install either, thus neither will work on a properly-fitted bike.

Which 3D printer to make bike parts?

http://www.tinkercad.com works well and is very easy to learn, is free, and can download .stl files for printing. re. the aliexpress printers, they are simply cheap chinese knock-offs of US designs. Being RepRap-based machines, they will break a lot, and will require constant tweaking to get...

Apparently not much of it, as he thinks that the things that stop you are called "breaks"...

What items for Self Defense for Night Riding?

I guess it boils down to whether you would rather wind up in court or in the hospital? For me, I'd bring a pistol along, if there were no alternate routes, but a Kimber Pepperblaster worked well for a friend who had a large drunk loonie pounding on his front door one night. I've got one near...

    Using Chassis for Negative Ground?

The other big issue is that while 12v will never hurt you if you touch the wrong thing, 48v or higher at high amperage is lethal! A trivial mistake or a crash could be deadly.

    Volton Alation 500 2013 updates

No, those are just a couple of Allen-head bolts that hold the (plastic) top-piece flange inside the battery cover. No reason you couldn't attach a waterbottle cage there. The LCD works well enough, but it certainly is not a Cycle Analyst...

    Volton Alation 500 2013 updates

I'm a newbie to e-biking, although I've clocked around 15K miles with pedals. I bought this bike a few weeks ago over the Internet, largely on the strength of the excellent Alation reviews here and at electricbikereview, and have not regretted doing so. I've got a couple of hundred miles on it...

Volton Alation 350 and Volton Ease DLX

I bought an Alation 500 last month. I'm happy with the bike, and it performs better than I expected. It has had a few updates since the online reviews were written: better fenders, newer controller with 5 levels, different charger, silicone rim around battery compartment, easier battery...

Anyone have any experience with Volton?

Personally, my experience with Volton has been good so far. I recently bought an Alation 500 a few weeks ago, and it's quite a nice bike. I've had two problems with it - both were manufacturing issues - a front wheel with a couple of pairs of spokes that did not cross correctly, and a sticky...
