Drift Trike 20" Front Motor Hub Suggestions

Seems like a reasonable price to me. I paid $400ish for a 1000 watt 48v kit from ebay for my trike. I still haven't got drift wheels for it yet, but with grippys on it I can hit 50kmh on a bit of a down hill. Sounds like the kit you're getting is 500 watts? That should still be plenty fast...

    1000watt ebay hub motor

Yes you're right, I meant straight off the charger. Got myself a GPS bike computer today and had another ride this afternoon, got to 39.5kmh on a very slight downhill. I'm not actually sure I want to be on this thing once It can do 50 haha. I'm thinking about making some disc brakes that I can...

    1000watt ebay hub motor

So decided to add 2 additional cells today for a total of 14s to get me to the same voltage as the "48v" lifepo4 packs. I get roughly 58v fully charged, and right off the charger I get 38kmh top speed. The seller is now talking to me, and being very cooperative which is good. Says he has some...

    1000watt ebay hub motor

I think I emailed these guys originally to ask when they would be back in, however they were unable to tell me which is why I decided to go for someone else, as I was a bit impatient to get my motor. I did eventually get a response last night, asking me to confirm what current the motor is...

    1000watt ebay hub motor

Alright so thought I'd fill you all in on how I'm going with this guy. Its been about 36 hours since I last heard from him, he was previously responding in 15-30 minutes. I got my mate to send him a message from his ebay account this morning inquiring about the same kit, and funnily enough he...

    1000watt ebay hub motor

That sounds much more like what I've heard about these motors. The guy I know with one of these is doing just over 50kmh on his trike with a 1000 watt motor, you can't tell me that mine is that much draggier! My motor is definitely running smoothly, and pulls fine from a stand still without any...

    1000watt ebay hub motor

I had a look at his feedback before purchasing and didn't see anything too bad, it was mostly just people complaining about how long it took him to ship items. I wasn't able to find many places in Australia which had these kits in stock at a reasonable price, so this was just about my only...

Great thanks, that at least gives me some sort of reference. So on flat ground does your setup sit just underneath the current limit? - Daniel

    1000watt ebay hub motor

The controller has been stone cold after every run so far, so heat in the controller is a non-issue at the moment. I'm expecting that I will have a little more drag than a bike, especially considering that I have two wheels on the back instead of 1. So it still sounds like I have a low speed...

    1000watt ebay hub motor

Ah okay that's the answer I was looking for, thanks! So the motor on this kit is fine and its simply too smaller controller? Shouldn't be hard to exchange controllers hopefully. There isn't a way to bump up the current limit on the controller? - Daniel

    1000watt ebay hub motor

Well it seemed like I should have been getting a high speed motor as the add claimed a top speed of 55kmh. The motor is pulling only 16 amps once up to speed. Isn't that a bit too low for a 1000 watt motor? It certainly isn't massively torquey as it still takes a while to get to speed on...

    1000watt ebay hub motor

So the controller I have appears to be compatible with both 36V and 48V. My 57 amp peaks are only for a very short time (less than a second) and from what I can tell, the rest of the time my current is under 30 amps. Maybe these controllers allow a short high current burst in order to help...

    1000watt ebay hub motor

I have absolutely no idea how to measure phase amps? Would this involve running a current meter on one of the motor output wires? My amp meter is currently inline between the battery and the controller. I thought these controllers were meant to be current limited too, but I'm definitely getting...

    1000watt ebay hub motor

That's what I thought. From what I've seen of SLA's, they aren't likely to deal well with the current this motor is using. Not to mention that the extra 4v at full charge still wont get the motor going up to around 470rpm unloaded which seems to be roughly what others report their motors do. I...

    1000watt ebay hub motor

My no load rpm did increase a little on a fresh battery. I got to 49kmh right after a charge. Theres one thing I can think of that didn't worry me at the time, but is kind of making sense now is that the label on the controller had been crossed out in permenant ink and re labeled as 48v 1000...

    1000watt ebay hub motor

Here's a photo of the motor in-case someone recognizes it.(I can't find a picture of one with the same pattern anywhere!) And here's a photo to show you that there's nothing crazy and draggy on it apart from me. Brakes definitely aren't dragging as I adjusted them right before leaving to make...

    1000watt ebay hub motor

Okay so I just got back from my test. Obviously on my initial test's I didn't pay close enough attention to the Amp meter (it was mounted on top of the battery behind me initially which may be why). On flat ground, the Amp's eventually settle down to about 16-17 which translated to about 33kmh...

    1000watt ebay hub motor

It is a 5ah pack at the moment, soon to be 10. It was a slow run however so managed probably half an hour of on and off use. My hand certainly didn't sizzle, so maybe it is a normal temperature. I just thought that may have been a clue as to the low top speed. I'll go and get a few more readings...

    1000watt ebay hub motor

Yeah I agree, it just doesn't seem right from what I've seen everyone else getting out of their motors. I've got a mate with one of these on his trike and he's managing just over 50kmh. Plus he's gotta weigh at least 20kg's more than I do. I'm only a pretty small guy, and I'm definitely 85 as I...

    1000watt ebay hub motor

No luck. That wire seems to be an ignition switch type wire. Nothing happens unless its connected. Its worth noting that when I spin my wheel up unloaded with freshly charged batteries, its more 49kmh. It still doesn't manage any more than 33kmh when I'm riding it though. - Daniel

    1000watt ebay hub motor

Actually, Scratch that. I've just had a closer look at the controller, and in the messy bundle of wires, there is in-fact a read wire which joins back to itself! Does this sound like a speed limit wire to you guys? My batteries are almost re-charged now so I'll take it out later tonight for a...

    1000watt ebay hub motor

Wheel's turning fine and brakes definitely aren't rubbing. The only thing I can think of about the heat issue is that the last run I made, I was going quite slowly maybe 10kph max. I was watching the amp meter and It was reporting that things were running very efficiently at that speed (200-300...

    1000watt ebay hub motor

Hi Dan, Here's some more info for you then. Wheel size is 26". Controller is the standard "silver box" controller that seems to come with these motors from eBay. Sadly that's all the information I can give you on the controller. The batteries are a little small, yes but are coping fine for now...
