BBS02 very stiff and generates power when bike rolled backwards

OK, following up here. I don't know how it is that I've used these motors for 5+ years and never noticed that they generate electricity when rolled backwards - I understand that a motor is also a generator but I thought the controllers in these prevented regen. At any rate, my other motors also...

BBS02 very stiff and generates power when bike rolled backwards

All Thanks to all the helpful posts here I regreased my BBS02; opened it all the way, cleaned out old grease and put Mobil SCH100 on the helical/nylon gear and the pinion/secondary. It seemed to go well, the motor is a little quieter. Went for a 14 mile ride w/ no problems. However, the bike now...

Battery pigtail too short: solder vs crimp

Thanks guys - I’ve been crimping power connections because I’d read that solder can become brittle. I could easily solder in an extension if that’s legit for a power cable. 52v and 20A max on my bike. thanks Gruesome but the motor already has bare ends so no preconfigured cable

Battery pigtail too short: solder vs crimp

Hi All I’m setting up a recumbent mid drive ebike and the battery pigtails do not reach the connectors on the motor. I was thinking of making an extension with 12ga wires and crimping it at both ends. Is this reasonable or should I be soldering new longer wires to the battery terminals? Not sure...

SOLD: Mac 10T rear wheel kit w/ CA3

Up for sale is a Mac rear wheel kit I bought from em3ev 3 years ago. This is a 10T wind 135mm OLD freewheel motor built in a 20" rim (I can unlace if you don't want the wheel). It has a brand new 7 speed freewheel. Includes the CA3 display with eBrakes, throttle, speed sensor, cadence sensor and...

    4 foot battery -> BBS02 cable

All I'm putting together a recumbent with a BBS02. Mounting the battery on the boom near the motor make it very front heavy, so I'd like to put the battery on a rear rack. It will be 4' from the battery to the motor; what cable guage/construction would you recommend? I've used 12AWG stranded for...

Cycle Analyst V3 preview and first beta release

Hi All I'm setting up my new ebike w/ a CA. I got everything working great using the Aux input (a potentiometer) to control the power limit during PAS. I am now trying to set up a preset to use the pot as a speed limiter (have the CA keep constant spped by varying power). From reading the docs...

    Samsung 30Q - high drain 18650 Li-ion cell's capacity test

Thanks for the explanation, it makes sense now that you point out that amps (not volts) is the capacity we are interested in. Thanks again!

    Samsung 30Q - high drain 18650 Li-ion cell's capacity test

    So does a 2.5V discharge cutoff mean that a 14S pack can be used down to 39.8V and still be at 20%? (4.2-2.5 = 1.7V/cell total capacity, 0.34V = 20% capacity. 2.5V x 14 = 35V at cutoff, .34x14 = 4.*V for 20% residual capacity) Asking because 42V seems to be a default LVC for 14S and that would...

    Grin trip simulator core temp

Thanks for the reply Justin! And thanks for the fantastic tools you've made for the community, they really helped me understand the parameters that go into selecting ebike components. This is my first build, I chose a geared hub and was concerned about cumulative heating since they shed heat...

2019 Motor Simulator, Mid-drives and other updates

Justin Just want to take the opportunity to thank you for all you've contributed to the ebike community. The motor simulator (and the trip simulator) were invaluable to me in selecting components for my 1st ebike. As well as this forum! Thanks so much -

    14s2p Minicube w/ 21700 batteries

Thanks - that was what I was thinking. Hopefully there will be a high discharge 21700 cell in the future, I love the small size of the minicube but would also like a little more capacity. This battery is close, but not suitable for a hill climber.

    Small 36V battery recommendations

I ordered a 52V from electrifybike and so far so good. electrifybike is the webstore for a Utah eBike shop called PoweredRide that seems to be legit - you can find some reviews on PoweredRide if you Google

    14s2p Minicube w/ 21700 batteries

I spotted this from UPP tonight: https://www.ebay.com/itm/UPP-Portable-Pocket-Battery-52V-10Ah-Samsung-50E-21700-Lithium-Battery-Pack/254227423546 It's a 52V 10AH battery based on the Samsung 50E 21700. Curious what people think - these batteries have a higher capacity but lower current rating...

    Grin trip simulator core temp

The temps were all at 21 and I selected MAC 12T from the pulldown menu, didn't change any parameters. Looking at them though, I see that eddy currents are non zero and also hysteresis torque. I would think that in a geared hub (with clutch) these terms should be zero when no current is flowing...

    Grin trip simulator core temp

Thanks amberwolf. I'm thinking that maybe the MAC is being modeled as a direct drive here - note that in the 1st mile which is all downhill there's still a temp rise, so I don't think that battery power is accounting for the temp rise. If I raise the speed limit high enough the battery starts to...

    Grin trip simulator core temp

All trying to decide between a Mac 12T and a BBSHD for my commuter setup. I tried out the Grin trip simulator on their site (which is very cool) and got a surprising result - see below. A long part of my ride is along a river, and I don't expect to use any power there. I set the speed limit to...

12T MAC motor and high current

Appreciate the thread - I have a 12T Mac kit coming from em3ev (30A 9 FET controller) that I'll be putting in a 700C wheel. A little concerned about heating, so here are a couple of questions 1) "steep" is a bit subjective in describing hills. I live on top of a 400' hill, the road up is ~0.4...

    1st build, advice appreciated!

Thanks bowl, I had run across those watt meters. My only hesitation was that they're 1/2 the cost of a Cycle Analyst which seems like a much more capable device. Given that you can use those around the house to find energy hogs, maybe I'll take the plunge. It's mostly for her, to avoid her being...
