    battery fire

Santa Cruz had a fire(s) with their Hecklers (AIR, but it could have been a different model), then recalled and replaced the batteries, but that's the first instance I've heard with a "major" manufacturer (unless you include Canyon in that designation since I think they had a problem too).

TSDZ8 would you buy one ?

I've ridden a BBS02 off road for the last 10 years and, although I don't have the power rating, it's very infrequently out of Level 1 (of 5) and takes me up almost any hill in that configuration. I still haven't heard enough good things about the reliability of "TS" to trust them and the PAS...

    1000w, 48V Specialized Stumpjumper $300

The kit would be motor, 30 amp controller, display, brake levers with cut offs, PAS, throttle, wheel and tire (thorn-proof); maybe PAS if it came with it (I used only throttle). It's too much trouble to ship and probably costs a ton (plus I discarded the box it came in).

    1000w, 48V Specialized Stumpjumper $300

Small frame Specialized Stumpjumper bike with near new 1000w, 48V motor (30 amp controller). No battery and local pick up in socal only. Kit available for $100.

Kit options mid drive beach cruiser build with 4 speed igh with coaster brakes?

It sounds like you're going in the "Electra" direction, but as above you could get a 90's steel MTB for $100 - $200 that would be a superior donor. 10 years of off road riding with a BBS02.

    Display?

For information, the no load speed is same as with a 175 pound rider (turned out to be 25 mph on flat ground). I disconnected the PAS, which had been instant on, jerky power and the throttle is progressive enough. The engineer at Varstrom sent me a code which should have permitted the access of...

Adjust PAS on Jasion EB5 Roamer

Surprisingly (to me now), I had a DillengerUS 36V, 350w kit that had been factory adjusted to provide a relatively smooth power delivery to its max of 20 mph using PAS and worked great with throttle being very responsive to the input.

    Best programmable controller for beginner?

I contacted Varstrom about their display since it was supplied with a 48V, 500w front hub motor (along with a no-name controller) and they stated that their system was user friendly only to change from US to Metric and top speed. They sent a manual, but it appears to me their system needs a...

Newbie looking for confirmation she’s not crazy before first conversion

In that case, IMO, you need a system capable of 2000w or so (probably 52V or 60V battery) and I would recommend a direct drive kit (look at e-bikeling or Leaf). However, you should consider a 26" MTB since it will have a 135 mm rear spacing for these motors and be more stable than your bike. My...

Newbie looking for confirmation she’s not crazy before first conversion

I love biking and have been enjoying the exercise for many, many years, but abhor the idea of riding on roads with no shoulder and cars whizzing past. IMO, keep driving and find another outlet for your regimen. If it's biking, build or purchase an "e" mountain or road bike and enjoy safer areas.

    Slo Ride

I haven't read all the considerations and probably can't envision the gearing, but with that much power, I think a SS is adequate even if it's not a drag racer.

Newbie looking for confirmation she’s not crazy before first conversion

Your selection of a BBS02 is excellent since I've been riding one off road for 10 years with no problems; it appears as though your frame is compatible. That said, I think a 26" MTB frame from the 90's would be a better candidate (you should be able to basically sell your Giant and buy one for...

    Hub motor off road riding

I had that same problem with rear hubs off road and abandoned the idea. As above, this has never been a problem with mids. I don't like fat tires because they seem to influence the direction of travel too much (for me), but you can avoid the pinch flat problem by going tubeless. Also, not a...

Comment, criticize my build. But be nice I’m new!

Nice job fitting everything. The caliper brakes you're ordering will be very weak (FME) because the arms are necessarily long. I had a rear hub bike that I mounted the battery on a front or rear rack or the down tube at various times and it handled best on the rear, so if yours handles fine, go...

How important is the donor bike?

I'm in the "doesn't matter which I use" tribe. I replaced the front fork on my 2005 SC MTB so it has a hydro-front, V-rear and it's fine as well as the 1994 V-only SC MTB or the Hydro-only Trek DIY mid I converted. It seems as though I'm never "under-braked".

How important is the donor bike?

There's nothing wrong with that bike for conversion. This is an older Specialized Stumpjumper which works fine for errands, but would need a suspension fork for MTB (but not smooth dirt roads). Note the linear brakes which function adequately for me.

    Programming bafang rear hub

The display on my system will allow only a Metric/US change in mph and associated readings (miles etc).

    26'' front fork on a 20'' wheel

Those are motorcycle speeds; for me, the solution would be to go back to good 330 shocks and a good MC fork with the correct size and rake. Front end problems have too serious ramifications to mess around.

    Programming bafang rear hub

I have the same problem with a front Bafang system and Varstrom display. E-HP explained the problem succinctly (see "Display"). Will this be neutralized with a Grin display, programmable controller or both?

    Display?

Thanks E-HP, that's really helpful, and seems an accurate description of my situation (I'm using 52V because I already had the batteries for a BBS02 conversion). I'll try the no load test, and consider a programmable controller. The no load speed was the same.

    Display?

The aluminum box is the controller. I purchased the Bafang 48V, 500W Front Hub Motor Kit from Amazon, and it functions adequately with a Varstrom DM-03 Mini Display. It's just that I can't change the system to eliminate the 24 mph governor and would like the power to be generated more gradually...

    Display?

The DM-03 Mini Display (25 amp controller) on a Bafang front geared motor doesn't seem programmable to remove the speed limiter and change the V from 54.6 to 58.8. Any recommendations for an inexpensive display that would allow this?

Make a bike into an ebike?

I don't know what you mean by too expensive, but West VA U has a testing program and rated a Specialized $50 helmet highly; you could look for the test on YouTube.

What mtb 26 in. conversion kit should I buy TODAY?

Thank you for your kind comment. No regen (don't want it) and no problem with overheating since the controller is exposed to lots of air turbulence. The bike hadn't been quite finished in the pic.
