    John, Thanks for your reply. It was the chips that were orange-hot when they erupted from the two magnets which collided with each other. The magnets themselves are fine. I'm choosing to repair the old motor because buying a new motor is not affordable on my budget. Thanks again, Mark

It just so happens, I have a magnetic polarity tester in my toolbox, and it's not too late, haven't yet started...
