CABDA Bicycle convention, March 26/27, Las Vegas

Is anybody going? As of this posting, its only 13 days away There are three cities, New York, Chicago, and Las Vegas one which is called "CABDA West" The event is at the World Market Center I don't even know if there is any ebike stuff there, but there is still no Interbike this year

Salvaged EV cells index: Leaf, Volt, Tesla, Zero, etc

Ford Lightning Truck, Ford Mustang Mach-E Another teardown video from Munro Live on youtube. In this pic they are showing the difference between the Ford Lightning truck cell and the Ford Mustang Mach-E cell. They are both the same thickness, but the truck cell is slightly taller and wider...

Salvaged EV cells index: Leaf, Volt, Tesla, Zero, etc

Porsche and VW, they seemed to have collaborated on several design features of the modules. VW uses a roughly 400V architecture, and Porsche uses 800V. The modules look identical, except the VW cells are twice as long, with the end-caps being identical. For configuring a DIY pack for a...

Should pouch cells be in constant external pressure?

Everything I've read indicates that adding an even pressure to the sides of pouch cells is a benefit. I have seen tech data on using as much as 100-PSI, though others wrote that they used as low as 20-PSI.

Building a 48V generator from a car alternator

Can't believe I didn't think about this sooner. Use a direct drive ebike hubmotor as a 48V generator. Here's a 4-minute video of that

    Question about DIY hybrid EV

The Zero battery pack is 28S, so when fully charged to 4.2V its 117V, at an LVC of 3.0V its 84V, and nominal 3.7V is 103V Two of them in series (or four 14S packs) would be 206V nominal...234V fully charged. I'm wondering if I can use a common 220V generator set to keep the vehicle running...

    Question about DIY hybrid EV

I recall reading about how youtuber "Rich Rebuilds" took the 102V drivetrain from a wrecked Zero motorcycle, and adapted it to a light vintage hot rod with a 3-speed manual transmission. He ended up using only two of the gears, but he reported that acceleration was very nice (and certainly...

Idea for Copper/Nickel bus variation for high current (variation on infinite slot)

Those should work fine. There's an article here on ES about converting a microwave transformer into a spot-welder. If the nickel was spot-welded onto the copper without the cells, you can use very high amps to spot-weld these. Found it: https://www.electricbike.com/resistance-soldering-unit/

Understanding and Using EGO Power+ Batteries

At 6:36 this guy uses solar panels to charge his 14S batteries. There are a LOT of 48V nominal charge controllers and solar panels that put out the required 55V+ in order to charge 13S packs, but I don't have definite answers for 14S I just checked the EGO website, and they are now carrying a...

    EGO lawn-tool 14S battery INVERTERS

Due to the success of the $100 150W inverter, EGO is now producing a $170 400W inverter. At 120V, that equals 3-1/2 amps. If there is any big news, its that the 150W unit is a buzzy square-wave. But for $70 more, the 400W is a sine-wave. There are a half-dozen pack sizes for EGO batteries...

A million + miles in an EV..

For the batteries, this is still impressive to me. Lets imagine he has 100K on his current battery pack, then one million miles means the previous three packs achieved 300K miles each as an average. Plus, battery wear is easier to track compared to wear on an ICE engine.

    Tabless design cylindrical cells tests

I am a huge fan of the tabless design. Of course the focus right now is on using these for cars, but I feel that one of the most important characteristics of the design is that it reduces localized hot-spots in the common tabs, which in the past have acted as bottle-necks to current. Heat is...

Would this way of sandwich bonding work. Nickel to copper.

I think it would wok, buti believe this method misses some of the benefits of the copper/nickel sandwich. The shell of the 18650 cell is nickel-plated steel...one of the goas of using a copper/nickel sandwich is to have a weld where the bus copper is directly touching the cell-tips, instead of...

    eGoldwing

Performance goals are fine if you have a very large budget, and deep resources. I'd convert he GW and see how it goes. For around town, you might be able to get by with 72V, but amps will be high, and acceleration might not be too exciting. If you want to use an affordable and reasonably...

    stator poles

The Joby aero motors for the air-taxi use 0.20mm laminations (*I think?). I'm told that if you make them any thinner, the thin insulating varnish becomes a significant portion of the stator-tooth volume, and there's a reduction in performance at some point. I don't know who you would order...
