@speedmd, @j bjork & @amberwolf - thanks for those comments and the links. From what I can tell all of these work on simply ramping current and hence torque. That's definitely not what I want, it just doesn't give the control response that's needed for trials. My controller is torque control...

Some more observations on e vs ICE trials motor response. I've been experimenting a bit with my e-trials now equipped with 2-speed box and a newer Fardriver that I can finally tinker with settings. It's been quite interesting. I'd hoped and somewhat expected that the low gear was going to...

    Nanjing far driver controllers

Update on BLE connection problems. My original controller was a TY48V270A_23V_G32. I still can't connect to that controller. I replaced it with a BJ48V270A_27_1BH68 and I can connect. The Android app doesn't show the field where you need to enter the verification code on any of my phones so it...

    Nanjing far driver controllers

Did you find a solution for the 721800? Are you suggesting the older BLE works with it? The supplier of the controller also supplied the BLE module for this controller after I couldn't connect with one I bought elsewhere.

    Nanjing far driver controllers

Yes. Been there done that, but it never completes the connection to the controller. Just sits there saying "BLE connected, Controller connecting" The manual refers to "the password can be reset by entering the serial number", but the question remains, where to enter it? It doesn't seem to work...

    Nanjing far driver controllers

I've now tried to connect with the iphone - the software at least displays sensible text boxes and buttons, unlike the android version. But still wont connect. I'm guessing it could be because the controller was initially configured while paired to another device, perhaps. In the "Nanjing Far...

    Nanjing far driver controllers

I'm struggling to get Android software to connect to Fardriver. Initially I tried with an old version, then upgraded to 4.2.9 but no change. I've tried 3 different Android phones but no joy. I've received the pin code (several of them now as I try to get things to work!) and managed to get it...

    Arduino Virtual Flywheel Throttle controller

@DingusMcGee Maybe my question should have been, "Is this version working or is the controller still seeing a drop below active throttle threshold voltage?" Maybe the blue trace is the threshold voltage? Good to hear that the Fardriver seems to respond well to sudden throttle signal increases...

    Observed trials bike designing

I'd be interested to hear how that feels. I'm kind of guessing it's going to be a fairly rudimentary analogy to a flywheel. Maybe just a minimum rate of accel/decelerate on the motor RPM. If I remember correctly they have asymmetric accelerate and decelerate "flywheel" settings, so riders can...

    Arduino Virtual Flywheel Throttle controller

@DingusMcGee what's the story with the signal going + & -? I thought the idea was it just added V to the output signal? Wouldn't the negative side cut power before the + added it? Seems I might have misunderstood the system.

Except his previous drive via the crank had a bit of flywheel mass from the crank plates. I've ridden my bike with a small flywheel, no flywheel & a big flywheel. No question whatsoever that big is best.

@ecstatic_subjectivity There's some wise words in there. I completely agree about the basic premise that it's all about the level of control you have over the system. This sentence is the voice of someone who has a good grasp of the activity! The rate of change stuff is a large part of what...

    Arduino Virtual Flywheel Throttle controller

More time on the basic throttle smoothing in order to produce a more ICE type torque response. I'm considering throttle output to being analogous to torque. My previous version was modifying the response rate, which wasn't actually what's needed. I think it needs to modify the maximum torque...

    Arduino Virtual Flywheel Throttle controller

I finished an alpha version of Arduino code to apply dynamic throttle smoothing proportional to RPM today. It needs a fair bit of polishing but at least on the simulator it gave vaguely sensible output finally. It's a mystery what it will actually be like to ride with - kind of does my head in...

    Arduino Virtual Flywheel Throttle controller

I have another thread discussing Moto e-Trials design that's been going a few years. One of the key things that's been discussed at length there is that ICE trials bikes rely heavily on flywheel inertia and torque delivery characteristics for their performance. To date (Feb 2024) there have...

Arduino development. I've started a new thread dedicated to developing the Arduino throttle manager. Arduino Virtual Flywheel Throttle controller It's been very slow due to being ignorant about writing code for just about anything, let alone micro-controllers, but I've got one small part of...

I know Neil talks about fully compressing rear suspension before Go in part to set the angle of the swingarm pointing down under the CoG, in order to encourage faster rotation. I've never been sure if I agree with the force diagrams he uses or not, but I've never cared either - in real life it...

What do you mean here? Does it manipulate it? I really don't know. I modified a thumb throttle today to reverse it - out is full signal, pulled (or pushed) is zero. Use it in place of the clutch lever. Haven't tested it yet but plan is just that one device for control, no twist throttle at...

@speedmd look up Neil Price, Trials and Enduro Skills. Much of his stuff is in a closed coaching group, but there's quite a few YT videos. They tend to be a bit chatty & long, but his analysis of a lot of this stuff is just so good. Well worth the time if you're interested. Consider if you...

I might have missed something. Isn't the present sticking point that the controller doesn't respond quick enough to the throttle? If that's the case, building a faster throttle signal isn't going to change anything is it? I found a thumb throttle in my box of bits. I think I can screw a short...

The key to getting lift is simply accelerating mass vertically. No complex suspension behaviour. Yes, a bit of output from suspension can add a little bit, but shock absorbers are there precisely to limit that pogo stick effect. Max lift is generated by completely stopping the bike, compress...

    Observed trials bike designing

Correct. I doubt there is much effective anti squat on trials bikes. Once you really stand hard on the pegs the suspension will compress well into squat effect, then as the bike lifts it might transition into anti-squat perhaps, but I suspect by then there's very little traction or acceleration...
