How to Solar Charge an Electric Bicycle

I was thinking about this as I fell asleep. I know li-ion charge controllers are uncommon, but the SLA ones I've worked with had settings to manually set the voltage and time spent at each stage (bulk, float, etc). I'm new to lithium chemistry, but wouldn't a timed bulk charge and a gentle (also...

How to Solar Charge an Electric Bicycle

I'm pursuing solar installation as a career, so I can't help but put in my two cents. As others have touched on, the central question is why you want to go solar. If it's mostly for fun, anything goes. If you want to reduce your usage of coal-powered electricity then focusing on your home is a...

    Considering titanium

I see a lot of references to broken spokes of the forum. Mine has very thick spokes by bicycle standards.. Is it a quality issue? I was actually pleasantly surprised at the even tension and trueness. Granted, I haven't put 100 miles on it yet..

    Considering titanium

Exchanging for the 26" will give me time to increase my battery pack and get/make proper torque arms. This ti frame also has an integrated dérailleur hanger, whereas my aluminum frame has removable.. Which would further weaken the connection. I'm not generally one to go for exotic materials...

    Considering titanium

Hi folks, So I recently installed a 1000watt 48v rear hub motor into my aluminum Nashbar frame touring bike. In many ways it is ideal. It has a big front rack for batteries, wide gear range, etc. But the fact that it is aluminum makes me nervous, and this was also my grocery/ riding around with...

1969 Raleigh Sports Restoration/ Ebike Build

Cool build, Raleigh Sports are fun bikes. I love drum brakes on bikes, and have a Sturmey-Archer Dynamo drum brake in the front on my ebike. They have an unwarranted reputation for being soft, but I've always found them capable of rapid deceleration but still nearly incapable of locking up...

First post, first build: Hall-effect trouble?

So... I think my bike is fine. I retested the Hall-effect sensors and they are fine. I just had to give the wheel a spin before I got sensible results. And the speedometer warmup period is still confusing, but I actually timed it and found out that it will only begin to register speed after 17...

First post, first build: Hall-effect trouble?

The motor runs great immediately, even if the display shows 0 mph. I agree that sounds more like a display/controller issue but I'm still scrambling to grasp the electronics involved. I haven't had a chance to do more difinitive testing, just got off a 12hr shift (at a bike shop, appropriately...

First post, first build: Hall-effect trouble?

Thanks for the input. I'm going to get more systematic about my diagnosis and try to sort this out. Or at least report back here. I'll pull the Hall connectors (except red and black power) and see if there is still this weird warmup period. I rode it to work today, 23 miles out into the...

First post, first build: Hall-effect trouble?

Hi folks, This is my first post, though I've been referring back to ES throughout the build process and am emmensly grateful for this great resource and community. So I got a 48v 1000 watt rear hub motor through Aosom on Amazon and installed it on my touring bike (Nashbar aluminum frame...
