2001 Kona Stinky Conversion - Advice?

I have an old '01 Stinky (picture below) in the basement that I want to electrify. I will mainly be using it to commute 13k to school along trails and road.

I am considering a couple different builds from Grin Technologies right now but would love to hear some advice or suggestions on motors and configuration.

Welcome on Endless sphere... those bikes are great, you can use them as they are and keep room for long term upgrades,
I believe if the " commute 13k to school along trails and road." is without significant climbs, any of the grin technology kit you look at will work fine, do you know which battery you will be running ? I haven't had good experience with geared hub, neither with mid drive kit. I prefer direct drive hub.
I run mine w.o torque arms and I have a spare swing arm of an other stinky version in case, I run the same motor as http://www.ebikes.ca/shop/electric-bicycle-kits/direct-drive/mxus-rear-cassette-kit-advanced-pas.html with 18s Lipo on alpine climbs and find it faultless, ...of course if you are after some downhill action too, you could upgrade the suspensions

I would go with the Ezee, and not any of the windings made for 20" wheels. The fast wind on the big wheel will just take off sluggish, and waste your battery heating the motor. This assumes a max of around 1000w of power.

why not the more powerful, more fun DD motors? Because your bike will handle better with the lighter geared motor, and you haven't mentioned anything like you weigh a ton, or would need to tow a trailer.

So assuming you weigh around 150-200 pounds, you will have a nice fun ride with the Ezee. You will like its lighter wheel, and its ability to coast more like a regular bike.

Do get the universal rear torque arm, if its not part of the kit already. I think it is.

My Stinky of a similar vintage.

I have used this frame in several forms, but this is an enduring favorite for road and trail riding.

Mac 6-turn motor with 19 inch M/C wheels. Torquey, Light, Agile, Practical, Simple.
Does well over 30mph in limited bursts (don't go too long or may overheat)

Same frame also worked well with Mac 8-turn in 26 inch wheels.

I haven't decided on a battery yet, it is something I still need to look into more.

I like the idea of a DD motor as well, the MXUS motor or the Crystalyte H series seem like the ones I will likely go with.

I am about 250 lbs (110 kg), so weight is somewhat of a consideration.

I definitely plan on implementing torque arms.


Is there a good place to buy batteries in Canada? Should I just use Grin for it all?
