Awsome !... i'm getting a few.... this would be awesome for the garage when you really don't want to haul the soldering station from the office workbench !.... or on the road for a quick repair.

I have a battery iron round here somewhere. Present from my mum, so I won't let it go. A mate got me a gas one though, which is simply loads better. Both are just about instant heat, but the gas one can pump up to 70w, and has various attachments like blow lamp and hot air. The hot knife gets occasional use too. Gas is little easier to get than batteries though, as it must be clean gas or the catalyst gets ruined. Lots of lady things use clean gas though.

...I figured that I would put a connector on one of my 120v spares and see if that worked.

Amazon has quite a few 12v irons as well, although not at the HK price point. I have a nice Antex MLX-25 12v iron (UK firm) that I bought years ago and frankly never used. They still make them and the replacement tip selection has actually grown larger through the years.
