Change display panel

This is my first post here, and it might be a noob question, but I'll post it anyway... Couldn't find an answer by searching the forums or the wiki.

I have a store bought e-bike with Bafang rear hub motor, and the very boring "790" panel (pic: http://goo.gl/eEhyj6). The bike itself is also very boring and I will probably move the motor to another bike soon. My question is: is it possible to use another panel/display, for example one of the LCD-displays that usually come with Bafangs mid drive motor kits? Or will I have to get another controller as well? How can I know which displays are compatible with my controller? The CA V3 seems popular on this forum, would it work?

Hej,
And welcome to the Forum.

Take the Controller part way out of the bike, enough to take a picture if it ( the sticker with all the information on it )
Then post a picture of controller / information sticker .
When trying to post a picture of anything to E.S. do not use a cell phone camera, use a Digital Camera and adjust the picture quality settings to around 2 mp . Then the picture will not have to much data to post.

Also if the Hub Motor has any sticker with spec's on it , post a picture of it as well.

Not all Display's work with all controllers, so others here will answer the question better than I can , once you get pictures posted of the controller's Spec's .

By the way ( BTW ) what bike did you buy ? from Ikea ?

No it's not IKEA :) It's a very cheap bike called Orion (my particular model is not available anymore). I guess "generic china bike" is a good description. I forgot to take a picture of the motor, but it's a Bafang 8FUN rear hub motor. I will check the exact model number later. 8 pins in the motor connector (3 thick and 5 thin), does that mean it has Hall sensors?

Hej,

Those 5 wires are the Hall Sensor Wires, and the other three are the Phase wires,

Most any Generic Chinese and/or Infineon , Hall Sensor Controller will work with your 8Fun motor.
But
Not every Display will work with just any controller.

You are best to get the Display and Controller from the Same Place/Vendor.

You say the bike is Boring, well yes running a bike at only 36 volts and 7 amps ( only up to 15 amps max ) is boring.

Are you ready to get a New and Better Battery as well ?

If so you can use 48 volts, or even better yet 52 volts with that little 8 fun motor. ( You just need to keep the amps low, like under 20 amps , if you go to 52 volts, try to stay under 17 amps)( with the Cycle Analyst ... C.A. , you can adjust the amp draw at any time you want by just pressing the buttons on it a few times to get to the amp draw menu , even during a ride if you go to a more hilly area. One of the reasons that people still like the C.A. even though it is not as modern looking.

Since Uppsala is mostly Flat , you do not need allot of amps , you could use more volts for more speed.

The best way to do all this is the more expensive way , ( but only by about $ 100 U.S.D. so in the long run not that much more expensive ), And that is by buying a Cycle Analyst and a 6 Fet IFRB 3077 or 6 Fet IFRB 4110 Infineon Controller that has the plug to directly plug in the C.A. . It in my opinion is worth it.

There are other options that will be available ...in the near future like controllers that are programed to work with a smart phone , but those controllers are more expensive than the 6 fet Infineon IFRB 3077, and they are , at the present time more for larger more powerful motors . ( right now the place that is working on that is concentrating on the larger controllers ).

How much of a hurry are you in to change the performance on that bike/motor ?

I am not sure if the Befang controller and new color display would work with the 8 Fun hub motor, it is made to work with the BBS02. which has higher amp draw than your little 8fun motor.
And
The S-LCD 3 Display / sinewave controller combo that works with the little Q100/Q128 motors might work, But , they are also low power so will be Boring . And the S-LCD3 Display has many pages of instructions, is not programmed in a sensible way and no English Support to sort out the strange way it is programmed, and it does not tell you how many amps and/or how many watt hours you have used from your battery , during your ride . nor at the end of each ride , not even the total cycles on the battery , to keep up with how much use the battery has had.
The C.A. has all these features. ( Just wish Justin would make a more modern , color, less expensive version )
So for the present time, the C.A. has the most and best information .

If you are going to be looking for a newer / another e-bike, Hold on don't buy anything yet ... I know of something coming soon, however it is not quite yet ready .
It is going to be a Road Bike, Carbon Frame/fork , a small/mid-size rear hub motor, and some features that will be improvements over all the other Road E-Bikes that are being sold at the present time.

I believe you should be OK to swap-out the LED Display for an LCD one - just read through this thread and you'll have a better understanding, as I did.

It is always a good idea to have two bikes,

1 Road , and 1 Mountain
or
1 lighter weight faster bike for longer / faster rides , and one that is what we in America call ... " A Work Horse " meaning it is slower, but can haul around allot of stuff like your food shopping, with Panniers , and trunk, going to work,
for when a friend comes to visit and you want to go on a ride, etc.

Thank you for answering! I'll have to think about it, maybe keep this bike as it is and go for a whole new build instead.
