I am new to LIPO, and want to get a pack near 48-52v for the set up I already run.

Being new I find it hard to find what else I need to buy along with the ZIPPY Compact 5000mAh 7S 25C Lipo Pack (would get 5800 if they bloody stocked it).

As a start I just want a simple 5ah pack so I guess I will need two 8s balance/charge/dischargers. anyone using the same batteries and could tell me exactly what is best?

I know I need cell monitors and a power source.

So would love a simple list to just get from Hobby king.

Thanks.

12s lipo is 44.4v or 50.4v off the charger. It is about the limit for cheap 6 fet controllers. It can be made from three 4s hardpacks at $25 each.
Now you have saved enough money to buy a battery management system(bms). A must have item unless your dedicated to maintaining your pack and wish to run the fire risks associated with doing so. Which is quite ridiculous when you see how many fires we have had here in the last month alone by trying to cut corners.
You have two likely sources for your bms. In the states talk to dnmun and in europe crossbreak. Both might be able to send you something plug&play for the right price.
Then you need a charger for about $50 and a box for all the spaghetti to be served in. A little frog box will do it. It will hold the lot. Controller too.

You can parallel packs to charge them all as one big 7s pack. So the minimum would be an 8s RC charger. And a power supply to run it.

Plus whatever you will use to parallel them. Paraboard is one way, but I found it hard to use due to the short wires, and many packs trying to all be close to the board. I would say get some of the wire harnesses that have one plug on one end, and many plugs on the other end for paralleling up many packs. The extra length of wire will make them easier to connect.

Get a cellog 8 for sure, for checking the balance of packs quickly and easily.

14s is what I run. about 57.4v charged to 4.1v per cell, and about 58.8v charged to 4.2v.

FYI, the 7s zippies come with 2 balance plugs, one 3s and one 4s. Not one 7s plug that you would expect and prefer. So if you want to charge as a 7s pack, you'll have to rewire the balance plugs on them to a single 7s plug. Cheaper to get a separate 4s and 3s pack and connect together for the same thing.

That was the most confusing part = the 4 and 3 balance plugs. I came to 7s because it seemed to be exactly what my current headway pack could dish out. But having said that even the headway starts at 58v hot off charge it drops to 52v after the first bit of throttle and when throttling it always around 48v.

I was hoping not to lose more volts by going to LIPO.

Do the balance plugs on the 6s batteries make life so much easier? It would seem it might be worth it.

I am not worried about the money side of things and I understand I don't need a higher c rate than about 20c, so it might be best to just get two

Turnigy nano-tech 8000mAh 6S 25~50C Lipo Packs

It would be better for not running down the battery on my usual 2-5ah rides. Most my rides are between 2 and 4ah and then come home. I don't want to parallel since I want to use my headway pack which has a ton of life left in it.

I planned to have the lipo on all the time, and clamp on my headway pack for long trips. If going up the mountains for some fun, use the headways to get there and back, hide the pack somewhere in the bushes or whatever or put to charge at a friends place and then go riding together with the much more compact LIpos.

Friendly1UK = I have a 12 fet controller so it will handle a bit more but I never tried anything else on it.

thanks for the help

If you look around, you can find 7s packs with 7s balance plugs, but I don't think HK carries them. Gens Ace does. So does Hyperion and probably others, but they're usually a lot more expensive than the HK lipo. It's not a big deal to replace the 2 plugs with one 7s plug if you know how to solder.

That's what I would do, if I bought the 7s. My own 14s setup is made from 6s+6s+2s. I had my own reasons for this, so I could run my mower on the 6s packs when I wish to. So 7s packs were not an option, but 4s+4s+4s+2s would have also worked, and allowed me to make up 6s for my mower.

I balance from time to time but mostly I am charging the risky way, but in a safe place, with a 57.5v charger. So I just plug in the 14s pack, charging without balance wires hooked up.

Lipo will drop in voltage steadily as you ride, but with a 14s pack, you still have a decent voltage for the entire ride. I didn't like 12s as much. Too weak when it got to 44v. That's as low as full charged 36v.

I wasn't thinking to use more than two batteries but it shouldn't be to difficult to fit the third battery considering the range possible. (I looked at that ace and hyperion but couldn't see anything comparable)

Thanks.

Now I am looking at

ZIPPY Flightmax 8000mAh 6S1P 30C x2
ZIPPY Flightmax 8000mAh 2S1P 30C x1

Will probably order when I get home after work tonight.

Don't think I have time for this BS!

Been looking for ages at getting the right lipos and by chance they were all there and then later in the day they are all out of stock.

No matter 662 or 4433 bloody hell!

now have to look at the 5ah section again. seriously do the lipo crowd constantly moniter hobby kig or what?

this is sick.
