Battery technology has improved a huge amount since the first generation a123 m1 cells. It would definitely be possible they could have improved the dewalt batteries, but... it seems they didn't. .
If they stopped making them its more likely because Dewalt stopped buying them. Probably the Samsung cells are cheaper and in Dewalt's opinion good enough.
Dr Bass will you be doing any test with these new cells comparing, watt hours and maximum current discharge ? as for cycle life and calendar life maybe we will have to wait a few years to know??
I hope so (if he wants to sell them ). C rate should be decent, since they are from power tool packs and the capacity should at least be pretty close to meeting the spec, since I doubt Dewalt would be willing to give up a lot of capacity.
