Battery technology has improved a huge amount since the first generation a123 m1 cells. It would definitely be possible they could have improved the dewalt batteries, but... it seems they didn't. .

Interesting.

oopss

That's bad new :(

2.2Ah instead of 2.3.... samsung lifepo4 chemistry instead of the good known A123 that can take 30C continuous...

Doc

If I'm not mistaken, didn't a123 stop making the 26650 cell entirely last year?

Could it be that they were happy with them, but had to change over simply because there was no supply left?

I confirm.. I got one 2011 pack and one 2010 pack .. Both have the 18650 Samsung cells... :(

BMS desing is the same.. the only difference in the 36v battery is the cells side cover and cells The rest is identical

They show 79Wh on the pack...

If they stopped making them its more likely because Dewalt stopped buying them. Probably the Samsung cells are cheaper and in Dewalt's opinion good enough.

Dr Bass will you be doing any test with these new cells comparing, watt hours and maximum current discharge ? as for cycle life and calendar life maybe we will have to wait a few years to know??

I hope so (if he wants to sell them :) ). C rate should be decent, since they are from power tool packs and the capacity should at least be pretty close to meeting the spec, since I doubt Dewalt would be willing to give up a lot of capacity.

If it's LiFePO cycle life and calendar life should be good.
