Interesting that its the DOE that again now has the fastest supercomputer in the world...

The new "TOP500" list of the world's fastest supercomputers released November 12 named Titan, a new supercomputer at the U.S. Energy Department's Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, the most powerful in the world.

Ten times more powerful than its predecessor, the Jaguar system, Titan will provide unprecedented computing power to accelerate scientific discoveries using technologies first developed for video game systems, the Energy Department said.

Scientists will use Titan's computing power for a wide range of research, including developing the next generation of materials used in manufacturing; for nuclear research to model the behavior of neutrons in nuclear power reactors; to model the combustion of fuels in internal combustion engines to improve engines for cars and trucks; and to simulate the atmosphere at new levels to help researchers better understand future air quality.,,,

The world's energy woes, however, will not be solved by faster computers. Slow == less energy intensive. Slow Food, Slow Money, Slow Economy. In my humble opinion.

Next year maybe they will nickname the Titan "GIGO"
DOE still hasn't figured out the way to break the vicious cycle of big oil.

Titan draws 9 MW, 2 MW more than Jaguar did, but it is almost ten times as fast in terms of floating point calculations,
Also, extensive reuse of the cabinets, wiring, cooling of the Jaguar. So very much a recycle - reuse kinda project. Amazing that the DOE is following its own energy efficiency philosophy.
The six initial projects to use Titan include S3D, a project that models fine grain physics surrounding combustion aiming to improve the efficiency of diesel and biofuel engines. In 2009, they produced the first fully resolved simulation of autoigniting hydrocarbon flames relevant to the efficiency of direct injection diesel engines using Jaguar..... CAM-SE is a combination of two codes: Community Atmosphere Model, a global atmosphere model, and High Order Method Modeling Environment, a code that solves fluid and thermodynamic equations. CAM-SE will allow greater accuracy in climate simulations.[15] Non-Equilibrium Radiation Diffusion plots non-charged particles with potential applications in laser fusion, fluid dynamics, medical imaging, nuclear reactors, energy storage and combustion.
My favorite projects: CAM-SE and S3D.

I wouldn't know WTF this stuff is, without endless-sphere (thankUverymuch), and now, everything I thought I knew, they know even more...
so maybe this is a good deal? I agree with John in CR. I bet they know about him too and maybe it just doesn't compute, so they need a bigger computer. I also agree with LFP.
Basically I don't need a supercomputer to know what I know, and if I knew what they knew, my head might fall off my shoulders. I know shit flows downhill.
I just hope they have enough energy to figure it out now.
