On a cold night in January I came across this backlit ad while walking one of Beijing's many oversized arteries. The previous week I had ridden my first eBike, an 800 RMB (US$100) pedelec that put a smile on my face in a parking lot in Guangzhou, and as a newfound convert, I had my eye out for all things eBike related.
From hotel rooms across China I often looked down at the streets and saw the amazing array of working bikes that few other countries have. But the pace of change was evident, and cars were often honking at bikers in order to pass. While walking one night, I was passed by a man on an ebike who silently accelerated around my right side. I felt as if I'd seen a ghost of a man on a ghost of a motorcycle.
