Hi, I hope someone can give me some advice.
I finished my gng 450 mid dirve on a giant fs and love it! I miss riding on the soft sands here though. I am thinking of starting another project on my current fat bike. Its a fat sand bike e monster with a 500w fun8 motor. Fatsandbikes.com.
The front mounted 500w motor is ok, but pretty anemic in the hills. I was doing some research on high torque hub motors but was still unclear of which gives the best torque. I'd probably like to keep the stock batttery 36v 9amp li-ion that came stock with the bike. Changing controller would be fine if necessary.
My questions are
Am I barking up the wrong tree? Will no hub motor give me the torque like my gng? I dont mind upping voltage etc if need be.
Do the crystalyte and magic pie etc hub motors fit on the front or rear dropouts of a fatbike?
My current fork is steel, should I keep the motor on the front or move it to back? (safety concern), Moving to back will mean losing my nexus 8 IGH, which I really like.
Thank you.

If u like the way the hub works in the front, keep it there. It's a lot simpler and you get to keep the IGH. In order to get more power, you'll need a different controller and more battery. 36v 9ahr is not gonna cut it. Only thing I don't like about that course of action is the way that particular fork flexes, and with increased power...idk... How about you throw a cromotor in back and save the Nexus for a different project?

To ride slow in deep sand, you need a very slow winding and more power. It won't have the torque of the GNG, but better than what you have now.

Mac 12t, 9 continent 2812, that sort of extremely slow winding.

Or, something huge and high powered enough to just ride 30 mph, even in deep sand.

Well, a "high torque" motor is not going to have much more torque than the same motor in a high speed wind. It just changes the speed where it operates at its best efficiency without overheating. Generally your torque is going to come from high amperage, so look for a motor/controller that can give you the current you need.

Thanks for the suggestions,
Now my bottle battery that came stock with the fatsandbike when dead.
I'm going to try and get a new hub motor and controller.
Thanks!
