Interesting, but I absolutely hate the way they hid the batteries, which to me ruins that it's shaft drive.

The author of the story needs an education in the facts. Hubmotors dominate the ebike market by a very wide margin...probably by more than 10:1 worldwide. It's nice to see the new crop of mid-drive ebikes, but a shaft drive that is given an obnoxious fake chain guard as the battery bay is downright funny. Don't these people have friends willing to tell them the truth during early prototypes?

It is an interesting concept for sure. But central drive dominates the market??? Where do these people get their facts lol. That is probably where the market will eventually go, but we are years away from that. In my country, hub motors dominate 30:1.

Last year, mid-drives and non-hubs were the exciting new trend, but...a rapid climb is sales percentages compared to the previous quarter are a nice-sounding sales blurb. Lets take a walk down memory lane:

“…One market remains dominant in e-bicycle sales: China, which accounts for 92% of the global market…In China…the number of electric bicycles reached 120 million in 2010…”

If sales of mid-drives has achieved less than 1.2 million worldwide yet, the ratio is worse than 100:1 for hub:mid-drive.

This is a European design with the European market in mind. I don't know what the ratio of hub motor to mid-motor sytems is in Europe, at the moment but, for sure, mid-motors will soon be dominant, if they aren't already....

In China, on a bicycle or scooter I've never seen anything but hubmotors. In the Netherlands a few months ago, I saw a ton of hubmotor bikes, and possibly a few mid-drives.

This reminds me of several motorcycles I have read about. An air-box is lighter than a full gas tank. Once a commitment to using a fuel pump was made, the gas tank weight was mounted down low, and the air-box was mounted in a fake "gas tank" in the normal location.

Also, Kawasaki went to a liquid-cooled inline, and omitted the fins around the cylinders. Past customers stayed away in droves, complaining on polls that it looked like an air-compressor. Kawasaki engineers put the (now un-necessary) fins back, and sales increased.

Customers (vs engineers) are a funny bunch...

Build it (well) and they will come (along), even if somewhat reluctantly at first. Kaw. forgot the first rule when showing the new styles and not having enough hot babes in tight suits on and around them. Most would never have noticed the changes at first sight or if they did they would think they would get lay'd if they got the new stuff. Shaft drive is a hard sell if it is expensive, not efficient, or durable. Will the market support the price points?
