Saw this on the news, but can only find this German speaking version... I think they said it was $40,000....a little tooooooo expensive... but cool

The interesting thing about this bike is a pedal operated generator that charges the battery, and although I can not understand, it seems that the engine only has power in relation to how many amps generate pedals giving.

More German, from a google search for "Elektrische Fahrrad-Rakete":

Typical amusing translation from Babel Fish:
The eROCKIT Bike combines the operation of a bicycle, i.e. step accelerating by strengthened into the pedals, with the road performances of a motorcycle. The electric motor provides for a high acceleration and maximum speed of 80 km/h.

“The healthy and refreshing total body employment of the wheel driving is combined with the driving dynamics of a motorcycle.” - so the manufacturer.

The range of the vehicle amounts to dependent, on style of driving and on the distance condition, 60 to 80 kilometers. Subsequently, the batteries, at a usual 220-V-Steckdose, must be loaded again. A loading procedure is final in three to four hours

eROCKIT is series hybrid: To progressive movement humans steer the number of revolutions of an electric motor by a crank gear and an inserted generator. The generator registers the rotation of the crank gear and sends according to the footstep frequency an output signal to control electronics. , The faster turns 8 KW strong direct current brush engine is the faster stepped.

The generator, which takes up the rotation of the crank gear, is a permanent magnet generator and recovers at the same time the footstep energy, which is then used for the reloading of the batteries.

The energy storage eROCKITs consists of lithium ion nano-phosphate batteries, which are characterised by thermal stability, high power density and long life span out. The batteries with an overall capacity of 2,9 KW/H are accommodated in a carbon fiber kevlar box.

A battery management system supervised permanently the conditions of the accumulators and provides for its optimal enterprise. This happens both when driving and in the switched off condition of the vehicle. By a load reconciliation between the individual battery cells the battery management system increases the life span of the batteries and maximises the range.

eROCKIT under Germany as light motorcycle and receives an European Union width road permission is classified. The vehicle is thus characteristic and driving licence requiring (in Germany the motorcycle driving licence class A1 necessarily).

The maximum speed of 80 km/h gives eROCKIT free trip also on motorways.

From that ErockIT site:
"ErockIT GmbH was founded in spring 2005 by Stefan Gulas. ErockIT GmbH develops a new kind of highly emotional electric motorcycle. Four prototypes have been built and successfully tested so far. A limited series of 10 vehicles is planned for the year 2009."

It's and A123 powered small electric motorcycle.

It's not getting any useful amount of energy from the pedaling. It's using the pedaling for a couple of reasons. It replaces the need for a throttle, and makes people feel/look like they are pedaling. And the second reason, which is the same reason my E-bike has pedals, is to change how the machine is legally classified. For example, I never use the pedals to move my bike, but without them, I wouldn't be an "electrically assisted bicycle".

Here's an english report, but not much technical detail:

Handmade product, a production run of just 10, I can see why they have a huge cost. It would be nice to have them priced for the masses though.

I actually like the idea of pedal powered power control (using the pedal speed like a throttle), it would make you feel pretty superhuman

It could be a problem though if you needed to power out of a corner and you experienced pedal strike. It would be nice to have a hand throttle in addition so you could keep your inside crank up when cornering and still have control over the power.

The pedal strike avoidance.. good point. Also in very low speed city maneuvering you can squirt some throttle and keep your feet off the ground. Same with emergency maneuvering. Off the lip of a drop or jump a blip of throttle can adjust your bike's attitude where pedal throttle might not be able to. Theres probbly more places a short wrist twist helps you out that you may not think about. I wouldn't want to not have a std. throttle!

I guess these bikes came and went. The price was probably the biggest obstacle, and then Stealth Bomber's killed whatever life it had left in it.

He say 25000 Euro

Must not be very popular. All the youtubes are old. The heyday must have been about 4 years ago. The odd looks didn't help, plus the price.
