Giant Talon 1 27.5 BBS02 750W 16.5Ah

Hi guys,

Last night I installed my 750w BBS02 kit from em3ev on my Giant Talon 1 27.5. The install was pretty simple even for a relative noob like me - the toughest part was removing the existing FSA cranks. I also got the battery from Paul at em3ev, a 16.5Ah 29e's in the triangle bag.

Took it out for it's inaugural spin to the beach this morning and wholly cow!!! I still can't wipe the smile off my face. 50km/hr+ on the flat ground with little pedaling. And that is with knobbly tyres and the 46t chain ring. I am so impressed with the torque and acceleration. And the one hill that I do have back up from the beach which is about 300m at 12% grade was just blown away.



I can highly recommend Paul and Moon from em3ev. Good communication and fast postage.

Thanks to everyone for their input along the way as this forum assisted with my decisions along the way.

That's very nice. I am lusting a bit after that Giant.

The first ride on one of these is great isn't it?? They do have bucket loads of torque.

I have played with the programming on mine a bit to better suit my commute. Gives me a few options on the PAS below the level of assist that comes stock.

Had a ride from my place tonight, down to Freo then south past South Beach on the CY O'Connor Beach and back up Rockingham Rd, Carrington St. Motor was great into the sea breeze on the way out and fairly hooted on the way home. Was using a PAS level with about 5amps of current, and then throttle for some hills. With firm pedaling, an easy 30km / hr up some of the hills.

Sounds like a nice ride you went on.

One question for anyone out there. When I installed the BBS02 the bottom bracket on my Giant is pretty wide so it doesn't leave enough thread for the final cap that goes over the bottom bracket nut. I assume people just leave it off if this is the case?

I'm planning to Install BBS-02 to my new 2014 giant blue Talon 27.5 5. Not as nice as you, think frame is same. I was having buyer remorse on 27.5 instead of 29er. I'm glad to see you post.

Can you take pictures of BB? how much thread you left on cap so I know when install BBS-02. Thanks!

I love the 27.5 and like you also considered a 29er. Certainly happy with my decision.

Below are two photos of the bottom bracket. You can see in the second photo that there is enough thread for main nut but it doesn't quite leave enough thread for the cap to hold on to. It's very close to being enough thread but as you can see in the second photograph below it just falls off. I am therefore either going to remove the cap or work out some way of fixing it. This is a very minor issue though.

oh, and I went for a liesurley ride this morning of 23km to Fremantle and back (and averaged over 31km/hr) and my battery indicator did not drop below 100% full, so that is a good sign.

I have put about 100km's on my BBS02 in its first week or so and so far so good. Great piece of kit.

Today was my inaugural ride in to work. It's a leisurely 11km from my place to work in Fremantle, Western Australia along an awesome bike path hugging the coast. Such a nice morning for a ride.

Your ride to work is a bit nicer than mine. I have been doing that same bike path a bit though. It's a nice 22km loop from my place to Woodmans Point on the road then back up that cycle way to South Beach then up South St to home.

yeah, it's a nice ride. I rode in at 5:00am this morning in the dark for swimming training which was a nice change. Hardly anyone on the bike path at that time of day so you can fang it - assuming you have good lighting.

I added a couple of small additions last night.

I added a small lock on the battery bag as you can see below. This is just to deter someone quickly unzipping the bag and taking off with my $800 battery. The lock won't stop someone serious but it's better than nothing.



I'm also experimenting with a front light. I purchased a cheap $15 headlamp on ebay that claims 2000 lumens. I cut the headband off and attached it to a trial bracket. Will see how it goes. It's rechargeable so I have placed the battery part in my triangle as you can see.

Thank you for the write up of your setup. I am planning on doing this with a Giant Talon 4 (2015) and that same kit from EM3. Seeing the pictures of the frame and install helped reassure me before my purchases. I can't wait to start commuting to work on this!

I think the Talon is a good bike to add the BBS to - my 2013 Talon 29er has a 73mm BB even though Giant's website lists it as a 68mm.... I can only get one nut on the crank bolt too.

Having done a few thousand K's on my bike the 9-speed alivio gearset is holding up well, so I wouldn't personally spend the cash for a 10 speed model - don't need the additional gear and not sure if the chain is as strong. The Tektro brakes are good too as are the base 29er wheels. Frame, seatpost, bars all no issues.

The front Suntour fork on my base model is however very disappointing and pretty much like a pogo-stick. I'll definitely be changing mine as it's the weakest part of the bike next to the original saddle. That part lasted less than a week.

I finished the build, and am enjoying the 12 mile commute to work! One issue I did have was that the lower BB screw with spacers was not long enough and only made contact with a few threads. These failed, and I lost a few threads and the screw would not stay in then. I went to the automotive store and bought a few longer screws (measured the depth of the hole to make sure) and that worked great!

Now I just need to look into slick tires as I only travel on paved paths or compacted gravel. I am also looking at getting new pedals. I took off the thumb throttle, as the pedal assist works well for how I am riding. I put on a push button ebrake, and was trying to get the ebrake sensor with magnet working on the right break, but it is not a simple thing to get that working. While playing around with that I think one of the three wires to the sensor broke at the connection point, so that might be out until I get a replacement.

I am actually beachcruiser the original poster of this thread, but had to create a new login as I'd forgotten my login details after ~4.5years.

As you can see this was my DIY kit build, a 750w BBS02 kit from em3ev on my Giant Talon 1 27.5 with a 16.5Ah battery of 29e's from em3ev in the triangle bag.

This has been an awesome bike and I have thoroughly enjoyed it for the past 4.5 years.

However, the battery is starting to sag at top speed performance as well as distance. Top speed originally was around 55km/hr if I recall rightly and total range of around 50km. After 4.5 years I think top speed is now around 50km/hr and total range around 35km.

I'm guessing this is quite normal?
I'm considering purchasing a new battery to give my current setup a birthday. I have been considering the BBSHD but I have been very happy with my BBS02 so can't really justify the upgrade.
What battery would you recommend and can I source this from Australia?
Can I go 52V to get a bit more performance, just plug and play?
I think I would prefer a downtube battery as well to lower the center of gravity slightly and avoid the triangle pack in the middle of the A-frame.
So, ideally, if plug and play, a 52V down tube battery of around 14-16Ah would be awesome. If available in Perth, even better!
