For someone looking for a quick easy to maintain commuter system, this appears to be good for the money. I've been beating a poor 1000 watt first generation MP for 3 years so far on 48 volts with no complaints. They have a video of the motor running submerged in a barrel of water http://www.goldenmotor.com. Both versions have the wires coming out the side cover instead of the axle, take an ISO disc brake rotor, and support regen braking. I don't see anyone hotrodding them, are they poorly made?

Thanks :?

I think the hot rodders just realize that more copper is the way to go for more. So it's the cromotor, 5400's etc for them.

I can see no reason it wouldn't last for years in commuter use.

Speaking of more copper, that 5kw scooter looks fun.

I think the Magic Pie line of motors are a very great answer to a problem no one actualy had.

The 9C is a little less powerfull, but lighter weight and dirt cheap. The Clyte HS and HT35xx motors were more powerfull and could be pushed to even higher power. The MP fell in the very narrow crack between these two motors, and while it's a great motor, it 's overshadowed by it's closest rivals.

MP's advantage is that it sheds heat excellently, better than most small-mid size motors. It's also a low speed wind, and has a tall stator - so it's just a torque beast. It's no H40xx or cromotor, but i find that it is similar in power of a H35xx.

I could never max the damn thing out in a 20" wheel because wheelies were the limiting factor :)

Yup the motor is very cool at high power

No joke... you seriously have to beat on it to get the side covers warm.

Took 5 minutes of me riding up a fairly steep hill at 30-38mph to get my motor up to 100c. And i'm 250lbs and not particularly aerodynamic in the first place :)

I've been looking at buying a quantity from them for a while. As presented it looks like a great commuter design with regen braking, horn, lights, cruise, PC programmable, etc. Has anyone had experience with their battery packs? They have an aluminum enclosed 48v 10a that looks convenient to remove and take inside to charge (wholesale minimum purchase 10 units). Problem is to get the better prices/shipping you have to spend $5k US which would be a big roll of the dice without the experience, opinions and assistance of all the great people on this board. Anyone had problems or pro/con warranty experience with the G.M. company?

Thanks

I would seriously hold back on investing on their kits and in the company, they have great marketing skills on their products but are a total nightmare to deal with. The motors themselves are good but the controllers are crap. I have in the past been sent sshockingly damaged parts or wrong parts. I quickly learned to deal with GM Canada only and not the chinese themselves. forget the idea of warranty. There are much cheaper and better alternatives out there. The magic pie motor on its own is very tough and robust but is very heavy and it can run sensorless if you have a sensorless controller.

I have had a wheel rim sent with a crack in it
A rim with a 6cm tear in it arrived as new.
Burnt out gm magic controllers as the have poor components and poor ampage and the reprogramming does nothingto improve performance.
Been sent the wrong voltage mini motors
Wheels with loose spokes

I also know someone who had a wheel/rim explode on him as he was riding..... Honestly!

The only parts i still use from buying a number of kits is a magic pie mk2 running on a sensorless controller as the hall sensors failed. The motor has also been completely re wired to take decent power off a 48v controller.

As said above they have great marketing appearance and ploys, but beware. Go to Gary at GM Canada as he will honour warranty and sort out problems with China. Thats if he is still trading.

My experiences are from about 3 years ago. I personally would not give China 5k

Their service sucks... you will have an easier time dealing with golden motor canada.

I had a positive experience with them kind of, I blew my external mp1 controller fixed it blew it again emailed the boys in china (politely) asking if they could replace the internals ( what they sent was a mp2 internal hub controller) which is same but different components like caps are on the other side and some are different sizes but using a soldering iron and drill I made it fit, just in time for an ebike holiday for the missus and I.

yeah I have had a fair few Magic pies, they are really bullet proof in my opinion, like NEP said, they shed heat, certainly no cromotor,
beats the 9c,s The nine continent has nothing really on the magic pies, iv blown 2 9c's but no magic pies, and i run more power through the pie

My friend has one on a 20inch bmx, 20s, 100 amp, and that thing is pretty insane, can do a consistant burn out on grass with out breaks on, just get the wheels spinning and you will have loads of fun

the internal controller is a piece of junk, def worth while busting it open and running external phase wires ect..

iv actually personally purchased in bulk 20 + hubs, they are very good to deal with and thats goldenmotor.com
I only ever purchased their hubs, hpms motos and big controllers..
Id stay away from their HPC controllers, or any of their controllers,,

I love the HPM5000B, run more than 20kw through it and my magic pie takes a daily beating of over 5kw peak power for short bursts..

If i was to do it again, i would not go with gm, rather get other cheap more powerful hubs from china, there are literally 1000's of companys in china making all sorts of ev crap

I did a dual pie dual kelly controller setup, i did not like the front wheel having power, but it was something different.
Overall i do rate gm on the higher scale tho, they are not bad.

I have bought a Magic Pie 3 kit last year for my wife's commute bike . I would agree with neptroinx, I had problems dealing with goldenmotor.com. My battery pack was lost during transportation, and I struggled to communicate with them. At one point I had to post public message on their forum to get their attention.
If I would have to do it again, I would buy from goldenmotor.ca.

That said, I am pretty satisfied with the kit. It is really easy and straightforward to assemble and configure. The battery pack is okay. The rack I bought 1 year ago was a little weak, it broke easily. The new one I ordered from goldenmotor.ca seems to has been reinforced a little bit.
I did not have any issue with the motor itself, but the low quality throttle gave me some hard time because it's not waterproof (see this thread: http://endless-sphere.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=26157&start=25#p800516).
