I am considering getting a 48v 20Ah pack from the group buy on yahoo groups. The size is 135*205*290mm, the weight is about 12kgs.
Is this a good idea, I already have a 48v 15Ah ping battery, but I wouldnt mind a 20Ah pack to use for longer rides. Is this something worth considering? Cost is 630$+shipping. The deadline is tonight and I just found out about it.

Thanks,
Kyle

If I'm not mistaken I believe that you can order one direct from Headway for that deal.

Email Victoria to confirm, but that's what she sent me on a one off purchace a while back.

Hi Kyle,
Beware being pushed into buying anything too quickly... if the group buy you are talking about is being "organized" by a certain Mr Joshua G, it is the same one I followed for quite a while a couple weeks ago in the hopes of getting a good deal on some good lifepo4 power. However, the organization was terrible and things didn't smell good at all:

-Up to date info about the order not being readily available to new people arriving on the group (the organiser/buyer in question seemed to think everyone should search through the whole pile of messages to know where things were at).

-Things just turned into a big soap opera drama between the organiser and the company he wanted to buy from (this being Don Harmon and someone named Michelle from LifeBatt) as they went though times of name-calling them hugs, them name-calling then hugs once again... and again! At that third love-hate relationship change I decided to stay sane and stay away from anyone "organising" anything in this way!

- This same organizer has a very odd way of doing business in my opinion, using denigration of other vendors such as Ping (describing him as a chinese hotmail based outfit with no real address who gives no good service - total poo!)

- He also used the time pressure technique a number of times to push people into ordering ASAP, and even put the blame of doing this on his Lifebatt pals at least once.

- A number of racist remarks where posted by this same organizer, both in bad taste, and not at all called for in a group buy setting. I NEVER buy from a vendor who blasts others.

- If one reads all the post history of the group there are a large number of contradictions and other anomalies that just don't make sense when comming from the same person - untrusworthy IMHO.

- Also note that a large number of posts were deleted from the forum, one reason I'm aware of was to remove all the times Josh described his partners as "LifebUtt", as not to piss them off after they got cuddly again.

For your info, I just ordered a pack from Ping today that looks like this:
48v20ah 150x150x270mm 10.5kg 580usd + 190usd shipping
He now uses better cells than before (according to him) that can take 2C continous, and the BMS is set accordingly to 40A. He also says that the cells have under 15mohms internal resistance per 4Ah, which would come to 6mohms per 10Ah equivalent. Ping has excellent rep for good service from all I've heard. He is also very good at answering emails, although once he was slow due to many emails.

Good luck on your decision!
Pat

I emailed her almost two weeks ago with no response (sent the message to two different adresses to be sure)... let me know if you get a response, nomad, and also pricing if you don't mind.

Will do, thanks for the advice, I think I will hold off. I was thinking about it because my ping battery 15Ah 48V has considerable voltage sag past 9-10 Ah (7-8 volts) with a 1C draw(thankfully I only need about 1/2C to go 20mph), and it cuts out around 13.5-14 Ah, still plenty good enough for what I paid, but I would like a little better performance. Maybe the new cells from ping are the way to go... Once you get some time with the pack I'd love to hear how it works for you.

Sure thing! I'll post a thread when I get it, but it will take about three weeks to get here (2 week lead time, 1 week post). I'll include some measurements and the like too.

A 20 ah ping is going to perform lots better than a 15 ping. It simply speads the load over more of the little pouches so each one is happier with it. The same thing applies to 24 volt batteries. Works em hard to get a lot of watts out of a 24v.

My bud just ordered a headway 48v 20ah pack. I will report anything he tells me too.

Any idea if this could be configured in 2 groups , with BMS and 48 volt charger , so I could put half on each side of my wheel ??

It costs $100+ more to get two 10ah packs than the single but you could split em DIY if you had the time.

Can anyone tell me if the Headway cells (38120S) that have 'tabs' are actually a screw type? The only information I have found on these is second hand hearsay. Shown in pictures here:
http://headway-cn.en.alibaba.com/product/50269244/206234082/Lithium_Ion_Batteries/38120L_10Ah_LiFePO4_lithium_ion_battery_with_tabs.html
I can find no other information about them. I have read they will be available end of the month, but really can't tell what kind of 'tabs' these are.

Slightly off topic, does anyone have any information on these PSI cells?
http://www.alibaba.com/product-tp/101124667/High_Power_Lithium_Phosphate_Battery.html

They look very much like lifebatt, but the price looks quite a bit better (22 - 32 USD).

Thanks

Rob

That's what I heard too, and the terminals are (will be?)female screw type connections *instead of male posts like lifebatts. Maybe send them an email and ask about their availability, and then let us know...?

When I was following the yahoo group buy the organiser ended up trying to sell us PSI cells at a certain point, claiming they are the same as lifebatts (I think they are if you look at the specs). He was claiming that the plant in korea was closing down, and they were trying to get rid the last batch of cells they had on hand. The (weird) story was that lifebatt was buying up the PSI plant itself, and was going to start up production again in the fall. Of course I heard many funny stories on that group, so I'm not sure what it's worth...
While they do look great and I would buy a pack right away at the alibaba price, I think they'll never sell just a few cells (maybe with a group buy though! )
