In Melbourne, Australia we are limited to 250 watt electric bikes on public roads. Is there any way to alter a 250 watt bike to make it faster, so it could cruise at something like 30km/h, or 35km/h and still be legal?

Thanks in advance.

No.
There is also a 25kph limit?

Yep, the only way to have fun these days is to go against the government  . the hippies had their acid and we have our lithium.

Actually on a flat road with efficient rolling the answer is possibly yes using a field weakening controller. I have some programmable infineon version sixes so pm me if you want to play with one.

You would be breaking the 28kph limit though.

Thats is dangerously slow. It would actually probably be safer if you can keep up with cars in the 40km/h zones rather than them whizzing past you.

Correct. Going this slow is a risk to your own safety, and the safety of others around you. You'll be overtaken by normal cyclists, pedestrians, people in wheelchairs, and buses. Get ready to breathe in a lot of smog if you decide to go this way. And have really bright lights, because you'll be relying on the drivers' competence rather than your own motor to get out of dangerous situations.

My suggestion - get a high power one and just ride it on the bike path. If that's not possible, you may have to wait for hell to freeze over - i think the government has a plan to implement a sensible policy then.
