Good day all.

As per the topic title, I am looking for information regarding the US18650GR Cells.

From searching the fourm, I can see that the topic of the 18650 cells seems to pop up alot of the time, but only a hand full of posts regarding the US18650GR Cells.

My understanding is that the US18650GR Cells are from laptop battery packs, and as such are not suitable for high capacity discharge, I have see posts saying that the 18650 Cells are only really suited at a max discharge C rating from 0.5-1.0C, but I have seen others saying you can push as high as 2C.

Also on my fourm / google searching I found out that the US18650GR Cells are not just one capacity size, but the capacity of the cell differs depending on the serial/batch number.

G4 = 2000mAh.
G5 = 2200mAh.
G7 = 2400mAh.

I did find this paper / datasheet regarding the US18650GR Cells.

Can anyone confirm my details so far, and do you have anything else that might be useful to know.

Thanks for your time.

Best Regards.

I have plenty of those, G5 variety. Mine are used, collected from discarded laptop batteries. The good ones (the ones I kept) average 1.7Ah. Characteristically they are just like other cells from Panasonic, Sanyo, Samsung... Have you read the first three posts of the "Info on Laptop 18650 LiCo" thread? It should answer most if not all of your questions.

SamTexas: Thanks for your reply.

I have see your "Info on Laptop 18650 LiCo cells" Topic before, but I have just had another good read over it again.

One of the mains things I wanted to confirm was the C-Rating for the laptop cells, and you are saying that laptop cells are 0.5C continuous discharge, but higher discharge is possible for short times.

Yes, correct. Based on my extensive testing and my conservative nature, 1C is fine for about 10 mins and 2C for 60 seconds. That said, I have discharged laptop cells on the bench continuously (from 4.2V to 2.5V) at 1C and 2C. The cells have no problem handling those rates, I just can't accept the temperature.
