Is it possible to run 36v motor on 48v battery?

Hey Guys,

Regarding my previous thread,
I've found a suitable narrow motor with disc brake mount and nice customer service,
but the motor is 36v, and my battery is little bigger than 48v (about 50.somthing V) and 18.2ah Samsung pink cells 2600mah.

The controller that will be associated to this motor is very small (smaller than cigarette box), I think its about 8-10A.

Is it possible to connect this motor to my battery?

Thanks
Nevo

Probably not if it's a 36v controller. Better to get a 48v one.
It's a 48v controller, I had front 48v motor before, but it doesn't fit the fork so I'm looking for a narrow one..

If you want great customer service Grin (ebikes.ca) carries Outrider motors too. They are in Canada and they sponsor this board.

Already sked them and they don't have a suitable motor for me :/

In general, motors can easily take about 2x what they are rated for. Sometimes even more. 52v x 10 amps will only be 500w, so ok even if the motor is rated 250w.

So go for it, I see no problem as long as the controller can take 48v. If so, it will have an absolute upper limit of about 60v when the battery is fully charged.

Just be mindful that the motor will also spin proportionally faster, which can have a bearing on efficiency and overheating, so choose one with the appropriate RPM.
