I walked into this place in the nick of time. JB was filling in for the late Glenn Frey on his own song. I'd heard Browne was an original Eagle but didn't finish The first album with them. Since he's from my town I was pointing out to the waitress he went to high school just a few miles away. . .

And what do you know, these old guys sitting close said they went to high school with him. Apparently they'd gone ahead and released an album from the shelf of the same label, maybe to promote the Eagles rather than Browne himself. Then came the accidental hit. The last they'd actually seen of him he was grousing he didn't want to be a solo act.

Then lady Gaga starts doing Bowie, I said it was funny they got a woman to do his music. One of the old guys said "Because she weird, just like him." That went over big.

Not clear on what you are saying ?
Are you saying JB was an "also ran" in the music game ?...if so I cannot agree.
He may not have been as well known as the Eagles, but he was more of a musicians choice, a talented writer, lyricist, instrumentalist , and singer, with a long list of successful albums in his portfolio.

What *I* am saying is what they told me. That he hadn't wanted to be a solo act. As I said they told me they went to high school with him and were still talking to him in his Nitty Gritty Dirt Band days. And as they told me that I was thinking I remember reading an interview where he had mentioned that.

I can't with a microscope find where there's the slight inference to JB as an "Also ran."

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band used to practice in a garage a couple of blocks from where I grew up. We would wait outside on our Sting Ray bikes and knock of the garage door between songs. They passed out some black and flouro green bumper stickers with a small logo and the band's name on them. 8)
