Staton has been a leader in 32cc "weed wacker" engines being adapted to bicycles for years. Due to customer requests to simplify left-side drives, they are stocking:

"...Mag Wheel 24 inch White, with Left hand threads on the left side and standard Right hand threads on the right side. Staton Design with Four Double Sealed Ball Bearings and the Staton Axle, 7-7/8" long with 10M x 1.0 metric threads and two 12 mm snap rings to hold in place.

This Mag wheel comes in the 24 inch size only. You do NOT have to buy a Gear & chain drive kit to order this complete wheel. Sprockets are Extra..."

Thanks for that link Spinningmagnets. How well do those plastic mag wheels hold up on a bike.

Also, that vendor also has all kinds of other parts useful for us as well, even several gearboxes meant for gasser bikes, which have lifetime warranties. Plus they are just coming out with a gas/electric hybrid drive.

Thanks for the tip,
Maybe I should call them up or visit them (I'll be in OK City for a visit in a month or so) ask them about the 18.5 to 1 gear reduction tranny. That would make hooking my Powerpack 36V 35 Amp motor way to easy to do. Think they would make special ones for scooter type motors and RC motors?

Hardcarve1, those graphics are awesome! I have a post somewhere and I drew on some scratch paper and scanned it into a JPEG. Compared to you, it looks like I used a crayon...without using my thumbs...while drunk....

Plastic mags are not the strongest of wheels. I wouldn't personally put one on a powered bike. You will notice no one at the skate park doing big tricks with plastic mags. They are more for looking cool while cruising around on your BMX in the 80's.

So, uhhhh, where's the spoked version? I have a hard time believing there's not a spoked version available, somewhere at some company.

I had a set of plastic wheels that lived through me beating the piss out of them for a couple of years when I was in Jr. High. Jumping off picnic benches, blasting off huge staircases and hopping back up them. That was about 15 years ago, and high strength plastic compounds and manufacturing techniques have improved a lot in the last 15 years. I wouldn't be worried about running one at all. It sure would have made my bike build go a hell of a lot easier! lol

Here's their spoke-axle that accepts left-side freewheel with left-handed threads (so it doesn't unscrew itself) $120, doesnt include spokes or rim, available with 36 spoke-holes, 28, 48, etc

"..Bicycle Rear Custom Hub, Left hand threads, 36 hole for 12 gage spokes and the right side has standard right hand threads for freewheels. Staton Custom FOUR high speed double sealed ball bearing custom hub..."

Hmmm.....12 ga spokes....nice.

cool products!

Hardcarve,

thanks for posting those models. The staton website intentionally hides the inside of the
gear box.

That will be a clean build!

I have used the Staton spoked hub for a few years and the thing is bullet proof.
The only thing I would like to know about the mag wheel is how do they set the metal shaft into the plastic, do they mold it in or is it inserted after?
I would want it moulded in with some decent anchor points to stop it spinning under load. My thinking is it may not be that strong if you put some high powered motors on them but OK for modest use.

12p3phPMDC, here's an ongoing thread thats looking at gearboxes, and the Staton "looks like" it might be an off-the-shelf 3-HP gasoline post-hole auger transmission.

Thanks for the thread.
