e-bikes, in various forms, have always been the solution to personal mobility in a planet running out of cheap oil. One day they will no doubt make the transition, maintaining the roads though will be another matter. They are basically made of oil.

Roads would be a better use for oil than moving 3000-6000lbs vehicles around. You have a lot more of it left if you design primarly for 10-1500lbs vehicles.

Kei trucks made of steel fit into that weight limit. A larger version could be made with aluminum and/or other materials.

Those are cool old trucks alright, I remember almost buying a 1000cc Suzuki Super Carry, called the Bongo van down here. You could make it out of light aluminium easily, replace the glass with lightweight perspex etc. Problem is none of them are safe on a road full as steel monsters. You'd have to do away with all those others first, or have dedicated roads, like bikeways...

Not gonna happen, not in my lifetime.
