Hello!
I'm at the beginning stages of an ICE to Electric conversion of a ranch UTV -- an older UTV called a "Mountaineer", mfg. years ago in Baldwin Georgia.
The current motor is a worn out Kohler Command Pro 15HP.

Most of the kits I see look to be designed for the ebike market (1000w-3000w) motors while most of the tractors seem to call for a Motenergy ME1004, (10Kw motor.)

Has anyone used the 3000w motors on a UTV successfully? It seems to me my needs are in more torque, not more speed. I welcome your thoughts and experiences with these or other kits.

The Kohler engine kicks out 3600-3700 RPM with torque in the 30-35 N.m range.
The Amazon kits (3000w) put out 4900 RPM and 5.8 N.m
I assume these motors are used as a direct or chain drive.

Side note, the Mountaineer has a 2 speed transaxle so I will have the ability to select low or high, but will the 3000w in low gear get me up a hill?

Can you post a link for the motor you are thinking of?
Like this one?:

If this is the one you are thinking of, You will probably be underwhelmed and have an overheated motor most of the time.

To really dial in on what you are are looking for, it will help to know the two trans-axle drive ratios,
what kind of weight you want to haul, what kind of range, budget, hill grade, etc., etc,...

Yes, that is the type of motor that caught my eye. Or perhaps this 4k version.

Documentation on the UTV is sketchy. I assume the beast is about 500-600 pounds. I'll haul firewood and dirt so another 100-200 pounds loaded. I'd rather build it out with overkill in mind then to be stuck in the mud yelling at the thing.

To match the 15HP output, using Google's infinite wisdom, says I need a 13Kw motor, which seems bigger than most tractor builds.
I mean, many golf carts run on 4Kw right?

I am willing to try an 8-10Kw if that seems closer to a realistic solution.

Why dont you just find a motor & controller from a scrap electric golf cart ?
Reasonable question! The retrofit will be easier if I use a mid-drive motor with a 1” shaft. An ME1004 would work too. Most of the golf carts I’ve seen, like the EZ go, look to have exposed coils and no shaft. Can you recommend a different cart option?
