I've long known that underwater UAV and micro-subs used in research have fully potted stators and rotors so they can be submerged as part of their design. This allows a certain amount of design freedom in sealing the "hull" of a car, since hub motors don't require a shaft to penetrate the hull.

There have been designs that do have gasoline or diesel engines with dynamic shaft seals to the driven wheels, and they simply added a bilge pump to keep the water under the floorboards at an acceptably low level.

This is the only application where I would approve of the implementation of electrically-controlled steering (a growing trend that I usually disapprove of).
