Hi Guys, just wondering if anyone has upgraded the stock 10ah SLA batteries with with lipo or similar? My lads bike is great but duration is poor... I'm thinking 12s 2 or 3p. the new hobbyking multi rotor batteries may be the way forward? I've not had a chance to measure what the stock contoller lvc is so not sure as to where I stand running a lipo setup., If it's to high I'm not going to get the benifit of big capacity if to low I'm looking at adding a CA or something like it to monitor the volts.

Any thoughts?

lots of people have done it and it improves runtime and power... You need to be 100% confident on how to maintain Li chemistry batterys as you can not treat them just like sla's

Hey thanks for the reply.. I'm ok with lipos as fickle as they are! What sort of configurations have you seen? I've done a bit of digging apart from a lithium pack on eBay & some race car engine starter lithium bats that's about all I've seen. Be interested in any links or info you may know of.
Thanks

Jon

no worries.. I just thought I had better mention it as I have recently been told about 2 house fires that involved oset users and lipo conversions ( I waiting to get more information on the root cause ) .. Ok, Have a look on trialscental there is a whole thread dedicated towards converting from sla's http://www.trialscentral.com/forums/topic/34845-oset-batteries-lithium-lipo-conversion-directions/ HK (hobbyking) now also do lifepo4 packs , these are not quite so worrying as lipo but still care needs to be taken .. earthX batteries do a oset battery conversion but these are very expensive and you can save around 50% on the price if you buy the lifepo4 packs and put the battery together yourself.

Edit:
Just looked at your other threads :D .. ok so I can see your already been introduced to lipo  .

I'm an old RC heli flyer so seen them from the start.. The only helis I have now are "E" ! earthX was what I was referring to with race car starter motor bats..

OK just clicked the thread.. thanks for my sunday evening read! Shit all on Tele... I guess it's just as Piissin down in brizl? can't even walk the dog!

:D

Cheers

jon

Cool thread.. I need to crack the LVC situation then job done. Looking to upgrade my raptor batteries real soon as I ride with the petrol dirt bikes my rapy has 12 5amph turnigy packs which should be a gift to the oset!!

yep don't bother with the Earthx, speaking from experience. If I knew then what I know now, I wouldn't have a set of them.

Im currently testing some lifepo4 packs from hk. So far they are looking good . they are a little more expensive than the lipo but for anyone that wants peace of mind it may be worth it.

Keep us updated on that! I will need to replace the earthx setup for more range. What size packs have you tried and is this with the stock motor?

Thats intresting, the pic I saw on your picture site the earthx had cyclindrical cells and these have pouches :D .. Anyway I have been testing the zippy 8.4ah 30C lifepo4's ((4s2p) same configuration thats used in the earthx batterys that i have split apart but looking at your earthx'x it appears to be 4s1p :? ) configured as a 16s2p ... they performed well with bursts of 140A with no major voltage sag.. stayed in good balance after 4 cycles, no major heating, capacity was correct and more of a true 48v battery ( flatter discharge voltage than lipo ) .. this was the good stuff now the bad  around the same weight as a 10ah 12s lipo around the same size as a 12s 10ah lipo and cost more than a 12s 10ah lipo.

Yeah that was the picture I had attained from elsewhere, thinking I had A123 Cylindrical cells in side. According to the very limited info I could get out of Earthx, When they changed their Cell management, they changed to pouches (that was what I was trying to convey in the PM's). :)
I can only see 3 sense wires coming from the pouches. Each group is sitting at exactly 13.1v. Is there something Im not understanding here?

Its 1 wire per join and the main + and - , it is 4 cells so there are 3 joins :D

Nice one! thanks
