my 1972 turntable kept losing 1 channel. The problem was the plug in cartridge. So i bypassed the slide in connector and soldered the 4 arm wires direct. These were about the smallest wires i've ever seen. Needed a 2x magnifier!
Now David Bowie sounds great again......Rebel Rebel, Fame, Young Americans, etc

1972 and still going strong after 37 years! In 2045 will I be able to say the same about my Nine Continent hub motor?

I really enjoy things with engineering and design to last decades. My local library had set up a record listening room in 1960's, filled with a dozen Thorens TD124 turntables. In the mid 80's when they had been kept on 24/7 for 25 years, I decided a Thorens was going to be the turntable for me. A bit steep for what I could save from odd jobs and my weekly allowance (I suffered a fine everytime I teased my sister), but I managed to scramble to get a TD 160 with an SME series 3 tonearm and Dynavector MC pickup. Shortly after, about when I left for studies in the US, the government decided to sack the old record player technology in favour of CD's. Hopefully the recordplayers were given to appreciative people rather than being thrown on the dump.

I have been through 3 or 4 CD players since I first got one in the 90's, but my original Thorens turntable still works fine, as
do the 1946 design/production date unknown Lowther speakers and 1970's J.E. Sugden amplifier.

it was in storage ~20 years. Before that it wasn't used much. I'd borrow records from friends and make tapes for the car. At home, i'd play FM, as i modded my tuner for way better sound.
I use things usually until they break, and then, only if i can't fix them cheap.; my fridge, dishwasher, washing machine, HW heater are all 20+ yrs old. Didn't buy HDTV until 3 mos ago when my '97 Samsung quit.
Thanks for sharing your story!
