Those guys dumped the clutch and ended up with something that worked rather than just dumped energy into smoking that poor clutch.
Direct drive is the way to go in a kart.
I think to ensure maximum torque from a stop, run a sensor-type controller, and definitely no clutch. On a 1-speed kart, the clutch is only there so you can stop and the engine can stay running. Motors have no need to idle, so it's not needed.
