rc motor for go kart ????

Those guys dumped the clutch and ended up with something that worked rather than just dumped energy into smoking that poor clutch.

Direct drive is the way to go in a kart.

I think to ensure maximum torque from a stop, run a sensor-type controller, and definitely no clutch. On a 1-speed kart, the clutch is only there so you can stop and the engine can stay running. Motors have no need to idle, so it's not needed.

Yes, from what I've read about the purpose of a clutch ("To let a gasoline motor idle while the vehicle is stopped"), you definitely don't need a clutch with electric motors. They are just fine being stopped and passing no current - your throttle determines how much power you're sending to the motors, and that can be zero. That's actually one of the awesome things about electric vehicles - they waste just about no energy when they're stopped.
