Hi, i'm still new to ebiking,

I found a source of cheap sony psp batteries, they are li-on batteries,
would these be good for e-biking?

Probably not. They're pretty low capacity (stock PSP batts), and I can't remember if they had some internals that prevented against perceived problems (i.e. high rate discharges looking like a short).

On the other hand, if you can get them cheap (and work out a BMS) it might work out. If you can get the extended play models, that would probably work better, though.

How cheap is cheap? That's the question.

That's lithium cobalt, the least-preferred lithium chemistry for ebiking. That's 1.8Ah, so 6.5Wh. I'd say unless you can get them for less than $5 each, some Chinese LiFePO4s would be a much better choice. Cheaper per watt-hour, and it won't require the awful mess of wiring and kludging it would for those. If you can't get them for less than, oh, $8, then the high-quality LiMn and LiPO4 power tool batteries start to become a better value per watt-hour.

They wrote a song about Lithium Cobalt:

[Talking Heads]

Watch out you might get what you're after
Cool babies strange but not a stranger
I'm an ordinary guy
Burning down the house

Hold tight wait till the party's over
Hold tight We're in for nasty weather
There has got to be a way
Burning down the house

Here's your ticket pack your bag: time for jumpin' overboard
The transportation is here
Close enough but not too far, Maybe you know where you are
Fightin' fire with fire

All wet hey you might need a raincoat
Shakedown dreams walking in broad daylight
Three hun-dred six-ty five de-grees
Burning down the house

It was once upon a place sometimes I listen to myself
Gonna come in first place
People on their way to work baby what did you except
Gonna burst into flame

My house S'out of the ordinary
That's might Don't want to hurt nobody
Some things sure can sweep me off my feet
Burning down the house

[/Talking Heads]

And even if you can get them for $1.99 or whatever, you need to ask yourself why they are so cheap. Could have been sitting in a warehouse for a while. I'm a sucker for a bargain, but I'd be wondering.

Cheap is good, and no other technology of battery is as light as LiCo, but they do blow up if you use them wrong.
at 1.8 amps per cell, they don't have mich power. you would need atleast 4 in parrallel to make a small battery, and probably need more than that to deliver the amperage you need. 40 cell minimum to have an effective 37V Ebike battery. $5 a cell might be ok.

But LiCo needs balancing, and setting up a balancer or BMS to handle 40 or more cells can get tricky.

I'm insain, I run LiCo. But I've led a full life and accept the risks. If you feel a bit touched in the head, then this might be a good setup. The bare cells could weigh upto 1/3 of the weight of nice, safe, boring LiFePO4.

How old are those battery. Soon a lot of people will have demand for those things. Ever since Sony create a new circuits for a new battery that prevent you to create Pandora battery, people are looking for these. New battery need to be modify, so some people won't like that. They hack the battery to boot the PSP into recovery mode and allow installation of 3rd party software.
