I thought I saw a Segway the other day (in the suburbs, not downtown) but it might be one of a million knock-offs now.

I would never buy one. If anything I would buy a Montague X90 Folding Bike.

Yeah, I always wanted a good folding ebike. If I had the $ etc., I'd make/buy one, and ride it across Asia-Europe. Regarding the Sedgways or the like, just looking at one makes me worry about an emergency stop. It's hard enough on a bike, let alone something that balances on one axis. Sedgway people have told me the answer is to go slow, and if an emergency stop is required, you step off behind the vehicle. But the essence of good transportation is speed, and stepping behind is inelegant. OTOH, I don't see anything wrong with a 3-wheel stand-up vehicle. You wouldn't even need a gyro for one of those. Actually, I plan to make one someday.

Yes I believe the key is something transportable and foldable so you can take it on EuroRail and/or BritRail, or any other transit system in the world that doesnt allow bicycle on their buses/trains. These Segway type vehicles are a joke I think.

.

I wonder how many of these clones are sold in the US, I never seen the clones around here.

They seem to be popular in China. (I think partly due to lack of enforcement against powered vehicles on sidewalks)

btw, segway was bought by Ninebot (who makes segway copies)

from wiki,

Though a Segway-focused organization, Disability Rights Advocates for Technology,[9] advocates for Segway PT sidewalk and facility access as an ADA issue, Segways cannot be marketed in the US as medical devices: they have not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a medical device and Johnson & Johnson claims exclusive rights to the medical uses of the balancing technology found in the iBOT and Segway.[citation needed] Dean Kamen sold the medical rights to the technology of the iBOT, a very stable and mobile powered wheelchair, to Johnson & Johnson.[10]
