Strange Diode Use on Battery Heater (Brammo Empulse)

I bought a Brammo Empulse TTR with a bad battery. The bike has about 1700miles in 10 years. I looked at the log file and found the cell that had the problem (swollen and ruptured). So, I decided that I'd rebuild the entirety of the battery pack. I've purchased some 148 Ah CATL cells and now need to rebuild the individual battery modules. NBD? Maybe I should have a build thread...

Anyway, there are aluminum divider plates inside the original battery module that have heater elements adhered to them. They have an axial thermal fuse (72 C) in series with the power supply. They also have a sensor (?) included in the same four pin connector. It occupies two distinct pins on the connector and the wires are twisted up with the power lines. I can't figure out what it does.

The two unknown cables are soldered to a Kapton/copper foil circuit that contains a capacitor that bridges the two lines and two legs of a transistor. The connections are to the base and the emitter. The device is marked as a 1D4 (Diodes Incorporated 45V NPN LOW SATURATION TRANSISTOR)


The collector pin is connected to a feature on the foil circuit that looks like a T shape. I haven't checked the continuity to see if it is connected to either leg. Assuming it isn't what on earth could this circuit be for. This is also affixed to the aluminum heat spreader plate but on the opposite side.

Have any of you seen something like this? Do you know what it is supposed to do?

How does a diode connected transistor work as a temperature sensor? (edit) -Nevermind, I'm looking at a TI application note that explains it. Fascinating stuff.

I already bought the big cells. They fit and weigh less than the originals but I need to reengineer the individual modules as the aluminum cases are just barely too small.

I'll post what I end up doing.
